Undeclared £5 Million Gift: Farage's Reform Braces for Standards Verdict and Prepares an Appeal

Staff Reporter

Britain's Reform UK is bracing for a negative report from the parliamentary standards commissioner over leader Nigel Farage's failure to declare a £5 million gift from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne, and the party plans to appeal against any adverse findings.

Multiple Reform insiders say they fully expect the initial verdict to go against Farage and are readying a fightback through the appeals process. That means the matter could drag on for months rather than ending quickly.

An MP under investigation has the right to present further evidence to the standards committee and to appeal through the independent expert panel. After any appeals, if parliament agrees to a suspension from the House of Commons of more than 10 days, Farage could face a second by-election in his Clacton constituency.

That route would require a recall petition, triggered by signatures from 10 percent of voters in the constituency over six weeks. The case therefore threatens not only the party's image but also Farage's parliamentary seat itself.

Farage was interviewed by the standards commissioner, Daniel Greenberg, last month, and the party is expecting to be notified of the verdict at any time.

While it waits, Reform UK has been overhauling its headquarters operations, having been destabilised by undercover investigations by both Channel 4 and ITV in recent weeks and sliding in the polls.

The Channel 4 reporting led to a police inquiry into alleged attempts to orchestrate illegal overseas donations, as well as the suspension of head of policy James Orr and Farage's communications chief Dan Jukes. They deny wrongdoing and an internal party report has cleared them, but the matter remains under police investigation.

The ITV reporting uncovered Reform councillors and election candidates filmed making racist and misogynistic remarks and graphic threats of extreme violence. One insider said the documentary was particularly damaging and showed that the party's vetting had not been up to scratch.

The party is nonetheless said to be bringing in organisational changes. New treasurer Harvey Griffiths has taken a central role in day-to-day party business, while general secretary Tom Waterhouse has taken on responsibility for vetting.

Financially, the party has also received very large donations, with £72 million from two donors, Harborne and Ben Delo, mentioned in reporting. On the strength of that windfall, Reform has begun a hiring spree and plans to take on 400 campaign managers in target seats, and it has sent a mailshot directly to voters.

Farage has been under investigation over the £5 million Harborne gift since shortly after it was revealed in May that the crypto billionaire had given him the money just before the last election in 2024.

Farage has said the gift was a personal, not political, matter and did not need to be declared. The rules state that financial support related to an MP's job must be registered if it was given in the 12 months before they enter parliament. The commissioner's verdict will turn on that question, and British politics is now watching for it.
