Bournemouth Rout 10-Man Milan 3-0 in the Europa League: Captain-Goalkeeper's Red Card Colours a Famous Night
AFC Bournemouth ran riot against Italian giants AC Milan in the UEFA Europa League. Maintaining complete dominance from start to finish, the Premier League side beat their opponents by a big 3-0 margin to claim a memorable victory.
The story of the match, played on Thursday night at the hosts' home ground, the Vitality Stadium, was written in the first half itself. Within the first 32 minutes Bournemouth went ahead through two penalties. Justin Kluivert and Marcus Tavernier scored the goals for the team.
The hosts were in attacking rhythm from the very start. In the eighth minute, when a cross from the right struck Koni De Winter's hand, the referee blew for a penalty with the help of VAR. Kluivert sent the ball into the net with a perfect shot to give his team the lead.
After that, Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan kept out several attempts by Ryan Christie and Evanilson, but in the 28th minute the goalkeeper himself dealt his team a huge blow. For losing his temper and pushing Bournemouth's James Hill and striking him in the face, the referee showed Maignan a straight red card and awarded the hosts a second penalty.
Maignan is not only Milan's goalkeeper; he is also the team's captain. His departure meant Milan had to play a large part of the match with 10 men, with a substitute young goalkeeper guarding the posts.
Beating Milan's young substitute goalkeeper Lorenzo Torriani with a fine shot, Tavernier doubled the lead. Bournemouth therefore went into the dressing room comfortably 2-0 ahead before the break, while the visitors were under pressure.
Bournemouth maintained their dominance over 10-man Milan in the second half as well. Kluivert and Christie created several chances, signalling a bigger margin. A man short, Milan could not find the rhythm to get back into the match.
Finally, in the 84th minute, came the most eye-catching moment of the match. With a superb free kick from about 20 yards that evaded the defensive wall, Moroccan winger Amine Adli scored to seal his team's memorable victory. That goal drove the final nail into Milan's coffin.
Such a win at home against one of Italy's most successful clubs is a major achievement for Bournemouth. Their attacking edge throughout the match, their ability to take chances and their full use of the opponents' mistakes produced this result.
For Milan, on the other hand, it was a night to forget. The captain's red card, two penalties conceded and fighting with 10 men — all together they had to return empty-handed from the Vitality Stadium.
This Europa League victory will boost confidence in the Bournemouth camp, while Milan face the hard challenge of bouncing back in their coming matches. For the English club's supporters, this night will be remembered for a long time.
