Bangladesh Hockey Team in India for Asian Champions Trophy, Face Hosts in Opener
The Bangladesh national hockey team left Dhaka for India this morning to take part in the Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament. Ahead of this prestigious event of Asian hockey, the squad is charged with the excitement of battle preparation.
The tournament will be held in Jalandhar and Mohali in India's Punjab from 27 October to 5 November. In this gathering of Asia's best teams, Bangladesh will compete against strong sides such as hosts India, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea and China.
The Bangladesh team had been in intensive training for quite some time ahead of this tournament. The coaching staff have placed special emphasis on the players' fitness and tactical play, so that the team can give its best against powerful opponents.
The squad is believed to have an excellent balance of young and experienced players. Observers expect this mix to have a positive effect on the field — the composure of the experienced players combined with the pace of the youngsters is hoped to make the team competitive.
Before leaving the country, Bangladesh hockey team captain Ashraful Islam said, 'We have worked hard for this tournament. Playing against Asia's best teams is always challenging, but our aim will be to give our very best in every match and bring glory for the country.'
Bangladesh will play a total of five matches in the league stage. According to Bangladesh time, the Red and Green begin their campaign with the toughest test of the tournament — against hosts India in the opening match at 7:30 pm on 27 October.
Bangladesh will then take the field against Japan at 5:15 pm on 29 October, Malaysia at 3:00 pm on 30 October, South Korea at 3:00 pm on 1 November and China at 3:00 pm on 2 November.
After the league stage, the semifinals and classification matches will be held on 4 November, and the final will be played on 5 November. Every match is therefore important for Bangladesh in holding a good position in the points table.
As Asia's top teams regularly compete in this prestigious Asian hockey event, the tournament is an opportunity for players to test themselves on a big stage. Bangladesh hockey has long been searching for consistent success at the international level, and such a tournament is a major opportunity to gain that experience.
The result of the opening match against India will have a big impact on Bangladesh's campaign. A good start against the hosts would boost the team's confidence for the following matches.
It now remains to be seen how much the intensive training and the captain's resolve translate into performance on the field. The country's hockey lovers are looking towards the Red and Green jerseys' fight on the fields of Jalandhar and Mohali.
