United Thrashed 4-1 by Como as Carrick and Bruno Clash Openly

Staff Reporter • Reading time: 3 min

One of Europe's most successful clubs, Manchester United, has turned into a volcano over the past decade — and captain Bruno Fernandes and coach Michael Carrick have now poured fresh fuel on the fire. On Wednesday night (21 October), the three-time champions and two-time runners-up were thrashed 4-1 by Italian club Como in the Champions League.

United fell behind in the second minute at Italy's Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia. Nico Paz's brace, along with goals from Tasos Douvikas and Jacobo Ramon, gave Como a big win. Joshua Zirkzee's stoppage-time strike merely reduced the margin of defeat.

The defeat was heavy, but what deepened United's discomfort were the post-match remarks of the coach and the captain. Questioning the team's tactics, Portuguese midfielder Bruno said, 'The decision not to press man-to-man and to sometimes leave space in behind was the coaching staff's.'

Carrick made little effort to dress up his reply. His message was blunt: tactics alone do not win matches — players have to work hard on the pitch too. Both sides' comments make it clear that United's crisis is no longer confined to results.

Carrick substituted Bruno in the 67th minute. After the match, the Portuguese midfielder voiced dissatisfaction with the team's defensive approach. In his view, United had allowed Como time and space to keep the ball and build attacks. Waiting for the opposition instead of pressing them from the start only boosted their confidence.

Alongside questioning the coaching staff's tactics, Bruno argued for more aggressive pressing. His logic: giving the opposition more time and space lets them play their own game easily.

In reply, Carrick pointed out that United conceded even after moving closer to a man-to-man pressing approach in the second half. 'In the second half we actually pressed half man-to-man. And from that situation we conceded a goal,' the coach said.

The sharpest part of Carrick's remarks concerned the players' work rate. 'Whichever system you play, whatever tactic you follow, if you can't run, can't run forward and can't run back, you cannot win,' he said.

The United coach did not hide his anger at the performance either. 'To be honest, I'm furious. We can win, we can lose. But the way we played tonight is simply not acceptable. I wanted the supporters to know that I understand their pain,' Carrick said.

Asked about his future, Carrick said he is not thinking about his position right now. He prioritised showing sympathy for the supporters' frustration and taking responsibility for the team's performance.

Last season, United finished third in the Premier League under Carrick and earned a return to the Champions League. He was then handed a two-year contract. But this season the team has failed to carry that success forward.

As results have worsened, pressure on the coach has grown. United remain winless in seven straight matches across all competitions. The club's crisis is now out in the open — and the public war of words between coach and captain has only made that clearer.

This season's failure is not about one match. Over the past decade, many of the footballers and coaches who arrived at this club have seen their careers damaged by the unstable environment. That old picture is repeating itself at Old Trafford.

The question now is whether the coach and captain can turn the team around after this public spat. The coming matches will provide the answer. One thing is clear: the Carrick-Bruno war of words has laid bare the crisis inside United.
