Dhaka: Eliza Zaman has received the nomination of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) for the by-election to reserved women's seat-23 of the Thirteenth National Parliament. She is a member of the party's central executive committee.

A notice signed by BNP acting secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced Eliza Zaman's party nomination. On Monday (26 October), BNP media cell member Shairul Kabir Khan confirmed the matter.

Eliza Zaman currently serves as a member of the BNP central executive committee and as joint convener of the Pirojpur district BNP. She is also the Barishal division organizing secretary of the central committee of the Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal.

The seat fell vacant after Ferdousi Ahmed Mishti, the member of parliament for this reserved women's seat, resigned on 1 October. The Election Commission then announced a schedule for a by-election to the seat.

After her name came up in connection with an attack, looting and vandalism at the Radda MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur in the capital, BNP chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman directed BNP leader Ferdousi Ahmed Mishti to resign. After Mishti resigned, the seat was declared vacant.

Under the announced schedule, Monday (26 October) was the last day for submitting nomination papers. Nomination papers will be scrutinized on Tuesday (27 October). Appeals against scrutiny decisions can be filed on 28 October, and appeals will be disposed of on 29 October.

Under the schedule, 1 November is the last day for withdrawing candidacy and symbols will be allocated on 2 November. Voting in the seat has been set for 12 November. If only one valid candidate remains after scrutiny and withdrawal of candidacy, that candidate will be declared elected unopposed.
