Rotary Holds Colourful Rally in Dhaka on World Polio Day, Calling for a Polio-Free World

Staff Reporter

Rotary International held a colourful rally in the capital Dhaka to mark World Polio Day. The rally, organised on Hatirjheel Lake Road, expressed solidarity with the worldwide campaign to eradicate polio.

The rally featured placards, festoons and awareness messages. Rotarians and participants from different walks of life took part, voicing their commitment to building a polio-free world.

The rally was led by Dr Ishtiaque Zaman, Rotary International's country coordinator for Bangladesh and a past Rotary governor, and A K M Shamsul Huda, deputy country coordinator and also a past Rotary governor.

Through the programme, emphasis was placed on raising public awareness about polio eradication, encouraging the vaccination of children, and increasing public engagement in the effort to build a polio-free world.

According to the organisers, polio is a disease that can be prevented through vaccination. Ensuring that every child is vaccinated is therefore the main path to eradicating it.

Rotary International has long played an important role in the global polio eradication campaign. The World Polio Day event was part of that continuing effort.

The organisation works in coordination with international health agencies and local communities, striving relentlessly to keep children safe from polio, speakers at the rally noted.

Participants said the gains against polio can only be preserved if awareness work continues. The message about vaccination must reach every area and every family.

The rally around Hatirjheel also drew interest from passers-by. The awareness messages written on placards and festoons caught the attention of many.

World Polio Day is observed around the globe to renew the pledge to eradicate polio. The Dhaka rally was an expression of Bangladesh's solidarity with that global initiative.

The organisers said their awareness and vaccination-support activities will continue until the goal of a polio-free world is achieved.
