Self-reliant women, a prosperous society — with that goal, the Barlekha Probashi Kalyan Parishad (Barlekha Expatriates' Welfare Council) is moving forward with its humanitarian initiatives. In the third phase of its programme, the council has distributed sewing machines among women of four helpless families in four unions of Barlekha upazila. The distribution ceremony was held on Sunday (25 October) at International School Barlekha.

The programme was funded by the council's Joint General Secretary Anwar Hosen (an expatriate in America), Assistant Organising Secretary Abu Saeed (America expatriate) and Assistant Organising Secretary Arifuzzaman Rasel (Portugal expatriate), and managed by the council. Its aim was to make women self-reliant and create employment opportunities for them.

The ceremony was chaired by the council's adviser Master Zakir Hosen and hosted by the council's well-wisher Ahmad Numan. The chief guest's address was delivered by the council's adviser and former Vice Chairman Emadul Islam.

Special guests included the council's adviser and Barlekha Upazila Press Club president Anwarul Islam, the council's only female adviser Amina Begum Dolly, well-wisher Shahajan Chowdhury Saju, International School Barlekha's acting head teacher Tapan Chowdhury, and Sahab Uddin, founder president of Team for Covid-Death Barlekha-Juri.

Also present were well-wisher Sadikur Rahman Shahed, women entrepreneur and recitation teacher Hamida Begum Jhuma, and the council's joint general secretaries Ali Hosen and Sadikur Rahman.

In this phase, sewing machines were handed to women of four helpless families from Barlekha Sadar Union, No. 7 Talimpur Union, No. 3 Nij Bahadurpur Union and No. 4 Uttar Shahbazpur Union.

The organisers said the main objective of the initiative is to create self-employment opportunities for women, make them economically self-reliant and help increase their families' financial well-being.

Guests at the ceremony highly praised the council's various social and humanitarian activities. They said the organisation works constantly in the service of distressed humanity, and that standing beside helpless and disadvantaged people through such an initiative is undoubtedly praiseworthy. They expressed hope that such social and humanitarian activities would continue in the future.

On behalf of the council, heartfelt gratitude and thanks were extended to the office-bearers who funded the sewing machine distribution programme, the guests present at the ceremony, and everyone involved.

The organisers said the council's journey of standing beside helpless people in the service of humanity will continue, and that such humanitarian activities for the welfare of helpless and disadvantaged people will carry on in the future as well.
