Dengue Kills 7 More in 24 Hours as 2,249 Are Admitted to Hospitals
Seven more people have died of the Aedes mosquito-borne disease dengue in the country in the past 24 hours. In the same period, 2,249 new dengue patients were admitted to hospitals across the country.
The figures were released in a bulletin sent by the Directorate General of Health Services on Sunday (25 October), as part of its regular daily update.
With the latest seven deaths, the number of people who have died of dengue this year has risen to 384. That means nearly four hundred people have lost their lives to the disease since the start of the year.
The admission figures are also large. With the 2,249 admitted in the past 24 hours, the total number of dengue patients who have received hospital treatment this year has climbed to 123,948.
By division, the highest number of new patients was admitted in Dhaka division — 1,033. The division covering the capital and its surroundings remains the largest centre of this dengue outbreak.
The picture outside Dhaka is also worrying. In the past day, 297 new patients were admitted in Khulna division, 224 in Rajshahi, 217 in Chattogram and 211 in Barishal.
In addition, 155 patients were admitted in Mymensingh division, 82 in Rangpur and 30 in Sylhet. Dengue infections are therefore present in every division of the country, at varying levels.
More than two thousand admissions in a single day means continued pressure on hospitals. Dengue care requires monitoring, fluid management and regular tests, so that pressure is felt at every stage of treatment.
As on other days, the health directorate's bulletin reported the admission and death figures. The collected portion of the bulletin does not give the age breakdown of those infected or details of those who died.
Dengue is spread by the Aedes mosquito. Because the mosquito breeds in standing clean water, preventing water from accumulating in and around homes is repeatedly cited as the main way to prevent the disease.
The statistic of more than 123,000 hospital admissions this year shows how widespread this year's dengue situation is. With deaths reaching 384, each day's update is being watched closely.
Whether infections decline in the coming days will determine how hospital pressure and the risk of death evolve. For now, the health directorate's daily bulletin remains the main basis for understanding the situation.
