Low Pressure Over the Bay of Bengal, but Dhaka to Stay Mainly Dry for Now

Staff Reporter

Although a low pressure area is sitting over the Bay of Bengal, the weather in Dhaka and its surrounding areas will remain mainly dry for now, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department. The forecast issued on Saturday morning said the capital's sky would stay clear, with virtually no chance of rain.

The information came in the weather forecast issued for the six hours from 7am on Saturday (24 October). During that period, the weather in Dhaka and nearby areas may remain mainly dry, the forecast said.

According to the forecast, wind may blow from the north and north-west at a speed of 5 to 10 kilometres per hour during this time. The light breeze may make the daytime heat feel slightly less intense.

The day temperature may remain mostly unchanged, the Met Department said. In other words, Dhaka is likely to experience almost the same temperature on Saturday as it did on Friday.

At 6am on Saturday, the temperature in Dhaka was 26 degrees Celsius, while humidity stood at 68 percent at the same time. Although humidity is relatively high in the morning, it may decrease as the day progresses.

On the previous day, Friday, Dhaka recorded a maximum temperature of 33.5 degrees Celsius, while Saturday's minimum temperature was recorded at 25.8 degrees Celsius. The gap between the maximum and minimum suggests that while days remain warm, nights are becoming comparatively pleasant.

Sunset in Dhaka on Saturday will be at 5:25pm, and sunrise on Sunday will be at 6:00am. This trend of shortening days is an early hint of the approaching winter.

No rainfall was recorded in Dhaka in the previous 24 hours. This rainless spell has kept the capital's weather dry.

Meanwhile, in its warning for inland river ports, the Met Department's storm warning centre said there is currently no warning message for the country's inland river ports and no warning signal needs to be hoisted. That means there is no weather-related disruption expected for river transport.

However, the Met Department is keeping an eye on the low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. A low over the sea can gather strength and change the weather later, so residents of coastal areas would be wise to follow forecasts regularly.

All in all, Saturday will pass for Dhaka residents under clear skies and dry weather. While there is no sign of a major weather change for now, forecasts for the coming days could shift depending on how the low pressure system behaves.
