Police Officer Killed as Private Car Hits Divider and Overturns in Bogura, Driver Missing

Staff Reporter

A police officer named Golam Rabbani has been killed after a private car lost control, hit the median island of the road and overturned in Sherpur, Bogura. The accident took place around 8 p.m. on Friday on the Dhaka-Bogura highway in the Chhonka area. The driver of the car could not be found at the time of the accident.

The deceased Golam Rabbani was a resident of Boro Kalia village in Pirganj upazila of Rangpur. His father's name is Jalal Mia. He was serving as a sub-inspector (SI) at Police Headquarters.

According to police sources, Golam Rabbani was travelling by private car from home back to his workplace in Dhaka. The accident happened on that return journey to duty.

When the car reached the Chhonka area, it lost control and slammed into the median island in the middle of the road. The report says the car overturned after the impact, and he died on the spot.

Golam Rabbani was seated in the back seat of the car at the time of the accident. The driver, who had been in the front, could not be traced after the crash — a question that remains central to understanding what happened.

His identity was later confirmed through an identity card found with him at the scene. The card provided the initial confirmation that the deceased was a police officer serving at headquarters.

Sherpur Highway police station officer-in-charge (OC) Zakir Hossain confirmed the accident. He said the police officer's body was recovered and kept at Sherpur Upazila Health Complex.

The OC also said the body will be handed over to the family after legal procedures are completed. The family is now waiting for that process to end.

The accident-hit private car has been kept in police custody, highway police said. Taking the vehicle into custody preserves the primary evidence for examining the cause of the crash.

The nighttime accident in the Chhonka area of the Dhaka-Bogura highway, which claimed the life of a serving police officer, has cast grief over his family and colleagues. He never made it back on his journey from home to his workplace.

The next steps are the handover of the body to the family after legal procedures, and tracing the missing driver and the cause of the crash. According to highway police, that process is currently under way.
