No government initiative to resolve diploma education crisis, Shibir president alleges

Staff Reporter

Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir central president Nurul Islam has alleged that although diploma engineering education has long faced a crisis over laboratories, necessary equipment and the curriculum, the government has taken no effective initiative to resolve it.

He made the allegation on Friday (23 October) while speaking as chief guest at the 'Sixth Diploma Conference' organised by the organisation at Al Falah Auditorium in Moghbazar in the capital.

Nurul Islam said the curriculum for diploma engineers has remained unresolved for a long time. He also noted the lack of adequate lab facilities, laboratories and necessary equipment for research.

In his words, the government has shown no goodwill initiative to resolve the crisis of this vast sector. He called on the government to take prompt and effective steps to improve the quality of technical education and to solve the longstanding problems of diploma students.

The Shibir president said there is no alternative to technical education in building a sustainable and prosperous Bangladesh. He also remarked that diploma engineers are one of the driving forces of the country's development and production.

He further said diploma engineers must build themselves into skilled professionals by combining honesty, ethics and modern technology, and play an important role in the country's progress. He also urged students to play an alert and conscious role in realising their fair rights and resolving the existing crisis in technical education.

The day-long summit began at 7:30am on Friday with the recitation of the Holy Quran. Afterwards, An-Nahda Foundation chairman Maulana Rafiqul Islam Miazi presented Darsul Quran.

The main proceedings of the summit then began with the inaugural speech of Shibir's central college activities secretary Hafez Yusuf Islahi.

Invited guests and organisational leaders at the event emphasised becoming people of moral values alongside acquiring professional skills. They expressed the view that alongside becoming skilled engineers, practising good character, punctuality and etiquette is essential.

A panel discussion titled 'Diploma Engineers' Career Thoughts and Job Opportunities' was held at the conference. Participants included former DUET president Engineer Irfanul Hasan Sakib and Engineer Imrul Kayes Parag, Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) assistant engineer Engineer Zahidul Hasan, and National Diploma Doctors Forum (NDDF) secretary general Md M Rahman Bappi. Leaders of FDEB also took part in the discussion.

Among others present at the event were Shibir secretary general Sibgatullah, central office secretary Azizur Rahman Azad, central HRM secretary Noman Hossain Noyon, central HRD secretary Helal Uddin Rubel and industry and culture secretary Zakir Hossain. Engineers, academics, Islamic scholars and teachers from various educational institutions also attended.

In line with the demands raised at the conference, students will now be watching what steps the government takes on the diploma education curriculum, laboratory and equipment crisis.
