Tk 21,900 Crore Project Proposed for Digital Transformation of Schools

Staff Reporter

A project worth Tk 21,900 crore has been proposed for the digital transformation of schools in the country. If implemented, the proposal to bring educational institutions under technology would open the way for major change in school-level education.

The project is currently at the proposal stage. A proposal of such a huge amount itself indicates the importance being attached to expanding technology in the education sector.

Digital transformation generally means technology-based teaching in schools, digital classrooms, internet connectivity, teachers' technology skills, and the spread of digital learning materials. Shortcomings in these areas at the school level have long been a subject of discussion.

The gap in technology facilities between urban and rural schools in Bangladesh is a familiar reality. Many rural schools still lack reliable internet connections, sufficient devices, or trained teachers, which stands as a major obstacle to digital teaching.

Educationists have long said that technology is not just about buying equipment; without teacher training, quality digital content, and regular maintenance, digital classrooms do not last. They say these aspects deserve equal importance in a large project.

The size of the proposed budget of Tk 21,900 crore itself suggests the plan is broad enough to bring schools across the country under its coverage at once. Such large projects are usually implemented in phases and must pass through various formal approval processes.

If digital facilities reach students, their opportunities will grow to acquire knowledge beyond textbooks, use online learning materials, and gain an early familiarity with technology. In today's world, digital skills have become essential at almost every level of education.

A large section of parents and teachers have long demanded better modern technology facilities in schools. The experience of online classes during the pandemic in particular showed how deep the gap in digital preparedness was.

But a big-budget project is not only about potential; transparency and accountability in implementation are equally important. Proper use of funds, quality procurement, and ensuring real benefits reach the school level will be the main challenges.

The next steps after the proposal's approval will now be closely watched. Which schools will receive facilities at which stage, and what the implementation timeframe will be — answers to these questions will come once the project's details are finalised.

This large proposed investment in technology for the education sector is therefore not just news of a project; it signals the possibility of changing the very nature of education for the country's future generations. Every step from proposal to implementation will need watching.

All in all, the Tk 21,900 crore project proposal for the digital transformation of schools has sparked fresh discussion in education circles. Progress in approval and implementation will determine how far it is reflected in the classroom.
