Benin Rout India 27-0 to Reach Last 16 as Goals Rain at School World Cup

Staff Reporter

The Under-18 School World Cup in China has produced an astonishing result. Benin of Africa beat India 27-0. In the match played in Suzhou, China, on Tuesday (20 October), India's youth team was left effectively helpless in front of wave after wave of Benin attacks. Scoring goal after goal throughout the match, Benin recorded one of the most talked-about wins of the tournament.

It was Benin's second straight victory. With it, they have secured their place in the last 16 of the tournament. Known as the 'School Cheetahs', the team booked its knockout ticket with a group match still to spare, proof of their consistent performance.

In their opening Group B match, Benin had beaten Qatar 7-0. The 27-goal win over India took their total to 34 goals in two matches. Even more notably, Benin have not conceded a single goal in those two matches — solid in defence as well as ruthless in attack.

For India, by contrast, the tournament has turned into a nightmare. On the opening day they had lost 15-0 to hosts China's second team. The 27-0 defeat to Benin was their second straight loss, leaving them without a point. Having conceded a huge number of goals in two matches, their knockout hopes are effectively over.

The group's other match also produced a big margin. The China-2 team beat Qatar 6-0. After the 15-0 win over India, it was the hosts' side's second straight victory. The contest for top spot in the group is now confined to Benin and China-2.

On points, Benin and China-2 both stand on six. But Benin are clearly ahead on goal difference. Their goal difference is 34, against China-2's 21. Ahead of the final group match, that margin keeps Benin in front in the race to finish as group champions.

India and Qatar remain without a point after two straight defeats. With the group's top two teams advancing to the last 16, both are now largely out of reach of those places. Their final match is now mainly about salvaging pride.

This tournament is not new for Benin. They are taking part for the third consecutive time. They finished fifth in the 2023 edition, though their placing in 2024 was 19th. This time, shaking off that disappointment, they have returned in a far more organised and sharper form.

In their final group match, Benin's aim will be to reach the knockouts as group champions. Ahead on goal difference, they are in an advantageous position on that path. Holding the top spot will matter for getting a comparatively easier opponent in the last 16.

Overall, Benin have given a clear demonstration of their strength at this School World Cup. Thirty-four goals in two matches, none conceded, and an early place in the knockouts — that performance has made them one of the attractions of the tournament. For India, in contrast, the defeat leaves a big question: whether it is time for fresh thinking about youth football preparation at the international level.
