BRTA Holds Road Shows at Four Dhaka Spots on National Safe Road Day
Under the theme 'Safe roads, prosperous country, Bangladesh first', the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) held awareness road shows and campaigns at four important locations in the capital on the occasion of National Safe Road Day. The programme was observed on Thursday (22 October).
BRTA Dhaka Metro Circles 1, 2, 3 and 4 — Mirpur, Ekoria, Uttara and Purbachal — organised the programme through road shows, leaflet distribution and loudspeaker announcements.
As part of the programme, awareness handbills and leaflets were distributed among drivers, passengers and pedestrians at Gabtoli and Sayedabad bus terminals, the road near the airport, and below the Kuril Bishwa Road flyover in the capital.
Through loudspeaker announcements, everyone was urged to obey traffic laws, avoid reckless speed and become aware in order to prevent road accidents.
BRTA Dhaka Divisional Director (Engineering) Md Masud Alam, along with officials and employees of the organisation, took part in the programme on the airport-adjacent road.
Representatives of transport owners and workers, Rover Scouts, the Drivers Welfare Foundation, Nirapad Sarak Chai (Nischa) and the Nirapad Sarak Andolon were also present at the programme.
The organisers said road accidents can be reduced not only through law enforcement, but through the awareness and responsible behaviour of drivers, passengers, pedestrians and everyone connected with transport.
At the road shows, drivers were advised to obey the set speed limit, use seatbelts, not use mobile phones while driving, and not drive vehicles without a valid licence and fitness certificate.
Motorcycle riders were made aware about using quality helmets, and pedestrians about crossing roads using zebra crossings and foot overbridges.
At the same time, emphasis was placed on transport owners appointing skilled drivers and maintaining vehicles regularly. These messages were highlighted repeatedly through leaflets and announcements.
The National Safe Road Day programme was held simultaneously at several of the capital's busiest points, so that everyone from terminal-based drivers and workers to airport-road passengers and pedestrians in the Kuril area received the message directly.
Like the day's theme, the organisers' core message was one: making roads safe is not the job of a single agency; accidents cannot be reduced without responsible behaviour from drivers, passengers, pedestrians and owners alike.
