A Slip of the Tongue at a Dussehra Event: Ranbir Kapoor Apologises for His Words
Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor had made a slip of the tongue while speaking on stage at a Dussehra event, saying the opposite of what he meant. He has now publicly apologised for the mistake, saying that his own words tend to muddle everything up.
The incident began in Kolkata. On Dussehra day, Ranbir attended an event organised by the Salt Lake Sanskritik Sansad at Central Park in Salt Lake. Speaking about the victory of good over evil, he mistakenly said that no matter how powerful evil forces are, in the end it is truth and goodness that will perish.
What he had meant to say was that in the end truth and the forces of good will triumph. But as he spoke, the meaning came out reversed. A video of his remarks quickly spread on social media, drawing criticism, trolling and memes of many kinds.
Then, on Wednesday (21 October), at an event in Chennai, Ranbir apologised to the audience. He said he wanted to apologise for what had happened at the Dussehra event the previous day, acknowledging that he had made a mistake while speaking.
Ranbir said that what he had actually meant to say was that no matter how powerful evil forces may be, in the end truth and the forces of good will prevail.
To explain this weakness of his, he brought up his own film 'Rockstar'. Recalling working with the film's music director A. R. Rahman and quoting a line from one of its songs, Ranbir said the incident reminded him of that time — whatever he tries to say, his words ruin it. He said he was truly sorry for the incident.
Actress Sai Pallavi was seated beside him at the Chennai event, and she was seen smiling as Ranbir spoke about the matter.
The video of the actor's apology has also spread on social media, drawing mixed reactions from netizens. Some expressed sympathy for him, while others commented that he seemed quite nervous while apologising.
One person wrote that, honestly, we should be the ones feeling embarrassed; let the man be at ease, he is tired. Another commented that he looked very nervous, adding: don't worry, Ranbir, you are doing great.
Several people also noticed that Ranbir's voice was trembling. One wrote that he is nervous and asked others not to attack him, saying this is normal, we are all human and mistakes happen. On the other hand, many also praised the actor for admitting his mistake and apologising publicly.
A major reason the incident drew even more attention is his upcoming film 'Ramayana'. In the two-part film directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ranbir plays Lord Ram and Sai Pallavi plays Sita. The cast also includes Yash, Arun Govil, Lara Dutta, Ravi Dubey, Rakul Preet Singh and Vivek Oberoi, among others.
The first part of the big-budget project, based on the Hindu epic, is scheduled for release on 5 November, with previews set to begin on 4 November. Various reports have put the combined production cost of the two parts at around Rs 4,000 crore. The second part is expected to be released around Diwali next year.
Advance ticket sales for the film began on the very day of the Kolkata event. According to published figures, advance bookings, including blocked seats, earned Rs 7.05 crore. Ranbir returns to cinemas after three years with this film; his last release was 2023's 'Animal', which earned more than Rs 900 crore worldwide.
