New Low Feared in Bay of Bengal on Friday, Cyclone Possibility Under Close Watch

Staff Reporter • Reading time: 2 min

A fresh low-pressure area is feared to form over the Bay of Bengal. The low may form on Friday (23 October) over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining east-central Bay.

It may intensify further afterwards. Meteorologists are therefore watching closely which way the sea situation develops.

Several private weather agencies have forecast a possible cyclone, but it is not yet certain whether it will hit the coast of Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department said rain may occur at various places in the country over the next five days. However, the weather across the country may remain mainly dry in the 24 hours from 6pm on Thursday (22 October).

In its 120-hour forecast, the department said a low is currently located over the southwest Bay of Bengal off India's Tamil Nadu coast. Its extended trough extends to the north Bay of Bengal.

Under its influence, another fresh low may form on Friday over the southeast and east-central Bay of Bengal, the forecast said.

Meanwhile, India's meteorological department said a cyclonic circulation has formed over the Gulf of Thailand adjoining Myanmar. It may enter the Andaman Sea by Thursday.

After that, it may gain strength on Friday over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining east-central Bay and turn into a depression, several forecasts mentioned.

The possible depression may move northwestwards towards India's east coast. It may also strengthen further during that time.

Forecasts by several private weather agencies have hinted that a cyclone could form from the possible depression. However, it is not yet certain whether it will ultimately turn into a cyclone.

Similarly, more observation is needed to determine through which coast the possible depression or cyclone might enter land.

As a result, nothing can be said with certainty at this moment about whether a cyclone will hit Bangladesh. Coastal residents will need to keep an eye on the Meteorological Department's next bulletins.
