New Bride Lima Dies Six Days after Her Wedding: Family Alleges Torture over Dowry-Like Gifts; Husband and Mother-in-Law Detained
A newly married woman named Lima Akter (20) has died in Nalitabari, Sherpur, just six days after her wedding. Her family alleges she was tortured and killed because the items sent from her father's home were not liked. Police have detained her husband Ekramul Haque (22) and her mother-in-law Farida Begum (50) for questioning over the incident.
The incident took place in the early hours of Wednesday (21 October) at Paikhatla village in Rupnarayankura Union of Nalitabari upazila. Lima was the youngest daughter of Saidul Islam of Majhiyail village in Dhara Union of neighbouring Haluaghat upazila.
According to family sources, Lima was married to Ekramul in a family-arranged ceremony on 15 October, with the dower (denmohor) set at Tk 170,000. Her death within days of starting her new life has caused a stir in the area.
Last Sunday Lima went to visit her father's home with her husband. She returned to her in-laws' home on Tuesday afternoon. At that time, discord reportedly arose with the in-laws over the items sent from her father's home.
According to family members, at around 3am Ekramul phoned Lima's brother-in-law to say that Lima had fallen ill. Later, at around 4am, members of the in-laws' family took her to Nalitabari Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor on duty declared her dead.
Dr Fahad Rahman, resident medical officer of Nalitabari Upazila Health Complex, said the new bride had died before being brought to the hospital, so there was no opportunity for treatment after her arrival.
Lima's relatives allege that, during an argument over the items sent from her father's home not being liked, she was physically tortured and strangled to death. However, the outcome of the investigation into this allegation is not yet known, and the allegation has not yet been proven.
Her husband Ekramul Haque's claim is different. He claims that after going to sleep at night, he woke in the middle of the night to find the door open. Going outside, he found his wife's body hanging by a scarf from the sunshade of an adjacent semi-pucca house. He says he then brought the body down himself and informed his brother.
Abdul Hannan, a sub-inspector of Nalitabari police station, said there are injury marks on the new bride's body. The husband Ekramul and mother-in-law Farida Begum have been detained for questioning, and the body has been sent to the morgue of Sherpur District Hospital for autopsy.
Officials said the real cause of the new bride's death will be known after the autopsy report and investigation. Amid the contradictory statements of the two sides, the autopsy result has now become the most important factor in uncovering the mystery of this death.
A death six days into a marriage has spread grief and anger among Lima's family and local residents. If the family's allegation proves true, it will stand as another tragic example of dowry-like demands and domestic abuse — but everyone must wait for the investigation and autopsy report for a final conclusion.
