Sylhet Development Authority Takes to the Field to Stop Illegal Building Construction

Staff Reporter • Reading time: 1 min

The Sylhet Development Authority (SDA) has taken to the field to stop illegal building construction in Sylhet. The agency has begun the drive to curb the trend of buildings being constructed without approval or in violation of the rules in the city.

The aim of the development authority's field-level activity is to identify illegal construction work and to check whether construction rules are being followed. Although approval and adherence to approved designs are mandatory for building construction for the planned development of Sylhet city, complaints of rule-breaking in various areas are long-standing.

The SDA drive is being seen as a step towards restoring construction discipline in the city. Illegal buildings not only hamper urban planning; unauthorised construction also creates safety risks for residents.

However, details of the programme, the areas where the drive is under way, and the measures being taken against illegal construction were not available in detail by the time this report was written.

City residents hope that if this monitoring continues regularly rather than being limited to a one-day drive, the trend of unauthorised building construction will decline and Sylhet's planned urban development will be easier to ensure.

Once the SDA announces its next steps and the results of the drive, it will become clear how effective this initiative can be in stopping illegal construction.
