Police have detained a member of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) with 600 yaba pills in Akhaura, Brahmanbaria. The recovery of such a large quantity of drugs from a member of the border guard force has created a sensation in the area.

Police said that on Sunday (18 October) at around 8 pm, he was detained from the road in front of 'Ma Janani Store' in the Debgram Nayabazar area of Akhaura municipality. A team of Akhaura Police Station had been conducting a drive in the area on the basis of secret information.

The detained BGB member's name is Tamim Rana (35). His home is in Nikurkanda village of Harirampur Union under Trishal thana of Mymensingh district. He is the son of the late Abdus Sattar.

It has been learned that Tamim Rana is currently serving as a sepoy at Barkal BOP of the 45 Battalion BGB Headquarters, Rangamati. That is, although his workplace is in Rangamati, he was detained from Akhaura in Brahmanbaria, with a large consignment of yaba.

According to police sources, on the basis of secret information, SI Samsul Haque, ASI Omar Faruk and ASI Billal Hossain of Akhaura Police Station, along with accompanying force, conducted a drive on the Akhaura-Mogra Bazar road.

During the drive, on reaching the Debgram Nayabazar area, police detained Tamim Rana. Afterwards, a search of his body recovered 600 yaba tablets.

Police also said that alongside the yaba, a BGB identity card and a button mobile phone were recovered and seized from him.

The officer-in-charge (OC) of Akhaura Police Station, Jabed Ul Islam, confirmed the incident. He said the process of filing a case against the arrested accused under the Narcotics Control Act is under way.

Stopping drug smuggling across the border is one of the BGB's main responsibilities. A member of that very force being caught with yaba has raised questions in various quarters. Whether the detained member was involved in this work alone, or there is a big syndicate behind him, is now a matter of investigation.

Police say that after the case is filed, the accused will be produced before the court and remand may be sought for questioning. Investigators hope that important information about the source and destination of the yaba may come out during remand questioning.
