Tangail court jails three for five years each over false murder case built on a living 'dead' man

A court in Tangail has sentenced three people to rigorous imprisonment and fines for filing a false murder case by presenting a living man as dead and claiming another corpse as a husband. Senior District and Sessions Judge Md Hafizur Rahman delivered the verdict at noon on Monday (26 October).
The convicted are Mst Nurjahan Khatun, wife of Md Surman Ali of Omarpur village under Tangail Sadar police station; Md Surman Ali alias Solaiman Ali, son of the late Yasin Ali of Sotibari Kadamtoli in Nageshwari upazila of Kurigram district; and Md Siraj Mandal of Omarpur village under Sadar police station.
Public Prosecutor Shafikur Islam Ripon said that many years ago the accused, in collusion, showed a false and fabricated dispute and filed a false murder case by passing off another corpse as the body of Surman Ali.
According to the prosecutor, the case was later used to intimidate the complainant, forcibly obtain a land deed from them and harass people.
After investigation and the testimony of four witnesses, it was proved that Surman Ali, who had been claimed to be dead, was alive and living in person in Kurigram district.
The court sentenced each of the three accused to five years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of 50,000 taka. In default of payment, they will serve a further six months of simple imprisonment.
The court acquitted the other nine accused in the case, as the charges against them were not proved.
As the principal convicted accused, Surman Ali alias Solaiman Ali, was absconding at the time of the verdict, the arrest warrant against him remains in force. The convicted Siraj Mandal and Mst Nurjahan Khatun were present in court when the verdict was announced.
