India Beat New Zealand Despite Slumping to 70 for 5, Becoming First Team to Win 200 T20 Internationals

Staff Reporter

India have made unique history in international T20 cricket by defeating New Zealand in a thrilling match at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. With this win, the world champions became the first team ever to record 200 victories in T20 internationals.

Chasing the hosts' target of 180, India at one stage slumped to 70 for 5 and were in deep trouble. From there, young batter Tilak Varma's responsible innings dispelled all fears and carried the visitors to a dramatic win with one ball to spare.

India eventually reached 181 for 5 in 19.5 overs to seal the victory. Winning under such intense pressure spoke to the team's mental resilience.

The match was an occasion for another milestone for India. After Pakistan, India became only the second team in international cricket history to play their 300th T20 international — and they marked it by setting the record of 200 wins as the first team to do so.

No other team is currently close to India in terms of wins. Pakistan, second on the list of most T20I wins, have 176 victories — 24 fewer than leaders India. By sustaining their dominance in this format over a long period, India have strengthened their superiority further.

India's consistency statistics are equally striking. Among the ICC's full member nations, their win percentage is the highest, at 71.1 percent.

However, in the overall list of all teams that have played at least 100 T20 internationals, India stand second in win percentage. Top of that list is the African nation Uganda, with a win rate of 78.9 percent.

The match itself was full of twists. Chasing 180, India lost wicket after wicket early on and at 70 for 5 victory seemed a distant prospect. But Tilak Varma held one end together, steadied the situation and guided the team home.

This win is not just the result of one series match for India; it is further proof of their sustained success in the shortest format. Two hundred wins across a journey of 300 matches is a feat no other team has achieved so far.

The statistics show that, by both volume and win rate, India's position as the leading T20 side remains secure for now. Closing that gap is the big challenge for their rivals.
