Truck Driver Lutfar Rahman Arrested in Pabna Over Roumari Crash That Killed Five Easy-Bike Passengers

Truck driver Lutfar Rahman (50) has been arrested over the Roumari, Kurigram crash in which five passengers of an easy-bike were crushed to death. A joint team of SRB Jamalpur-14 and Pabna-12 arrested him in a joint operation in Pabna district town at around 9 pm on Saturday (24 October).

Roumari police station's Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kawsar Ali confirmed the arrest. Police said the arrested Lutfar Rahman is a permanent resident of Pabna district sadar.

Police said he has been brought from Pabna to Roumari police station. He will be sent to court after interrogation. OC Kawsar Ali said the arrested accused Lutfar Rahman has been brought to the station from Pabna, interrogation is under way, and he will be sent to court once it ends.

The incident dates back to 17 September. At around 2:30 pm that day, a cargo truck collided with a passenger easy-bike at Shiberdangi on the Dhaka-Roumari highway.

Five people on the easy-bike were killed in that collision. The dead were Lipi (26), her son Rishad (12), daughter Tuba (7), sister Sharifa (42), and Nazrul Islam of Rajibpur upazila.

Sharifa's daughter Brishti (25) was seriously injured in the same incident. The deaths of five people, including several members of one family, cast a shadow of grief over the area that day.

After the accident, the drivers of both the truck and the easy-bike fled. On the night of the incident itself, the families of the dead filed a written complaint at Roumari police station against the two drivers.

After that complaint, SRB Jamalpur-14 began a shadow investigation alongside police. After a long search, the joint team raided Pabna district town and arrested the truck driver, police said.

The arrest operation was carried out by a joint team of SRB Jamalpur-14 and Pabna-12. The joint raid was conducted in Pabna district town at around 9 pm on Saturday, and Lutfar Rahman was caught there.

He is now being interrogated at Roumari police station. Police say information is being taken during interrogation about the course of events on the day of the accident and about his fleeing.

Once interrogation ends he will be sent to court, the OC said. The next legal process in the case will proceed according to the court's direction.
