12 Injured in Shooting at Homecoming Party Near Florida University

Staff Reporter

At least 12 people have been injured in a shooting near a university campus in Florida, United States. Police said six adults and six juveniles were among the injured.

The incident took place on Perry Street near the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University campus in Tallahassee on Saturday night.

Police said 11 people sustained gunshot wounds and another person was injured.

In a statement, Tallahassee police said at least three of the shooting victims had sustained serious injuries, while nine others were reported to be in stable condition.

Initial findings showed a physical altercation preceded the shooting, police said, without elaborating.

Police said an altercation at a homecoming party escalated into gunfire. A fight between two or three individuals led to shots being fired just before 8pm, a newspaper report added.

The youngest of those shot was 11, a newspaper said, but police did not immediately respond to a request for comment on that.

Police chief Lawrence Revell said it was especially heartbreaking to know that children were among those injured.

The police violent crimes unit is investigating the circumstances.

The university said on social media that the safety and security of its students, faculty and staff remained its highest priority.

The shooting occurred hours after the university's homecoming game. Such a shooting amid a festive atmosphere has created panic in the area.

It is hoped the full reason behind the shooting will be known once the investigation ends. For now, treating the injured and investigating the incident are the authorities' main tasks.
