Through a glass roof and windows to the Western Ghats: Vistadome coach joins the Madurai-Guruvayur train
A special new coach has been introduced to give passengers the experience of travelling by train while watching hills, green forests and valleys pass by. For the first time in Southern Railway's Madurai division, a Vistadome coach has been attached to the Madurai-Guruvayur Express, allowing passengers to enjoy the natural beauty of the Western Ghats mountain range up close. For now, the service is running on a trial basis on selected days.
The biggest attraction of the Vistadome coach is its large glass windows and transparent glass roof. While travelling along the mountain route, dense green forests, rolling hills and valleys can be seen clearly through the glass, making the experience different from an ordinary train journey from the very start.
The interior has also been arranged with comfort in mind. The executive chair car can seat 42 passengers at a time. It offers rotating seats, pushback chairs and a modern toilet. At the touch of a button, the window glass and the roof can be made transparent or partially transparent, so passengers can control the light and the view to their own liking.
According to the schedule, the Vistadome service will be available on train number 16327, the Madurai-Guruvayur Express leaving Madurai Junction, every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. In the other direction, train number 16328 leaving Guruvayur will carry the Vistadome coach every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
The route itself passes through the scenic hill country of the Western Ghats. Between Senkottai and Punalur, passengers will see green-covered hill slopes, valleys and a winding railway line — the very scenery for which this coach is considered especially suited.
Another notable part of the journey is the Aryankavu pass. Nearby lies the Senkottai Gap, a natural pass cut through the mountain range. From there, sweeping views of the Western Ghats open up, turning the trip into something more than ordinary travel — a sightseeing journey in its own right.
The line also features the British-era Pathimoonu Kannara bridge, better known as the 13-Arch Bridge. Several bridges and tunnels make this railway journey more varied, and seeing them through the Vistadome's glass roof and windows is the central appeal of the service.
There are five railway tunnels between Senkottai and Punalur. Among them, the tunnel between Bhagavathipuram and Aryankavu is about one kilometre long. These tunnels were built to connect the plains of Tamil Nadu and Kerala by rail, it was stated.
Fares for travelling in the Vistadome coach have also been fixed. From Madurai Junction to Punalur the fare is 1,010 rupees. Travelling to Ernakulam Town costs 1,570 rupees per person, while the fare up to Guruvayur has been set at 1,875 rupees.
The train connects two important pilgrimage centres — Guruvayur in Kerala and Madurai in Tamil Nadu. That gives the route a distinct appeal for pilgrims as well as nature-loving tourists, and the new coach is expected to strengthen that appeal further.
Through the new Vistadome service, Southern Railway wants to make train journeys more comfortable while also presenting the natural beauty of the Western Ghats and the notable engineering landmarks of this line to tourists. How passengers respond during the trial phase will shape the decision on expanding the service further.
