Made for Just 3 Crore, 'Premada Urali' Earns Over 113 Crore in an Unbelievable Run

Staff Reporter

The year 2026 has turned into one of unbelievable success for low-budget cinema. Its biggest symbol is now the Kannada film 'Premada Urali' — made on a budget of just 3 crore rupees, it has already earned more than 113 crore.

The film has set the record as the most profitable movie in the Kannada industry. In terms of profit ratio, it has left behind even blockbusters like 'KGF' and 'Kantara', the two films that redefined box-office expectations in Indian cinema.

'Premada Urali', set against a rural backdrop, is essentially a romantic family drama. At the centre of the story are a father and a son. When a modern daughter-in-law enters their family, the picture of the whole household changes.

The film also powerfully portrays a woman's struggle against social customs. Because the story matches the emotions and lived lives of ordinary village people, it is believed to have touched audiences so deeply.

Yet the path of making and releasing this film was anything but smooth. Cinematographer Rajakanth S K recently said in an interview that when they went from door to door to big producers hoping for just 15 lakh rupees for promotion and release, everyone turned them away.

But after the film became a success, the situation changed completely. According to Rajakanth, many of those who once turned them away are now full of regret, and are even desperate to get a meeting with the director.

Because of the tight budget, the entire team had to shoot under extreme hardship. There was no way to arrange a decent hotel for more than 100 cast and crew members. An ordinary community hall was rented, and everyone slept on the floor there.

However, since the shooting took place in director Manoj Kumar's own village, the villagers helped them in many ways. That support became the team's greatest strength in difficult times.

Promotion plays a big role behind any film's success. But with no money for a big event, the director chose an inventive route — he arranged for 10,000 radium stickers to be placed on the backs of auto-rickshaws across Karnataka.

They also printed invitation cards like wedding cards and handed them to ordinary people, requesting them to watch the film. This low-cost, creative publicity ultimately carried the film to people's doorsteps.

Although many hall owners cancelled shows at the last moment before release, the situation is now completely reversed. Even on its 29th day, 'Premada Urali' is running in more than seven hundred shows, and every show is going house-full.

To handle the overflowing crowds, cinema halls are having to lay out extra chairs and carpets — an almost unprecedented sight for a low-budget regional film.

The triumph of a group of young people who refused to give up despite a hundred rejections and crises has now become an inspiration for the whole of Indian cinema — 'Premada Urali' seems to have proved once again that it is not a big budget, but a story that touches the audience's heart, that has the final word.
