Sunday Weather: Rain Likely in Chattogram, Mainly Dry Elsewhere as Well-Marked Low Sits over the Bay

Staff Reporter

With a well-marked low active over the Bay of Bengal, the Meteorological Department has forecast how the weather will behave across the country on Sunday (25 October). According to the forecast, rain may occur in Chattogram Division today, while the weather elsewhere is likely to remain mainly dry.

The department said the low over the east-central and adjoining south-east Bay of Bengal has intensified into a well-marked low and is now positioned over the east-central Bay and adjoining areas. This synoptic situation forms the backdrop to today's weather.

The forecast also indicated the system's likely next movement. According to the department, it may move further west-northwestwards and could intensify further, making it important to keep watch on conditions at sea.

Today's rain probability is centred mainly on Chattogram Division. The forecast says rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty winds may occur at one or two places in the division — not widespread rain across the whole division, but a possibility limited to a few areas.

The picture for the rest of the country is different. The department said the weather elsewhere may remain mainly dry with a temporarily partly cloudy sky, so most areas outside Chattogram are likely to pass the day in largely dry conditions.

No major change is indicated in temperatures today. According to the forecast, daytime temperatures across the country may rise slightly, while night temperatures may remain nearly unchanged.

The forecast also mentioned wind conditions in the capital Dhaka. Wind in Dhaka today may blow from the west or north-west at 8 to 12 kilometres per hour. The department said the relative humidity in Dhaka at 6 pm was 52 percent.

The department also gave the sun schedule: sunset in Dhaka today will be at 5:24 pm and sunrise tomorrow at 6:00 am. As the days grow shorter, evening will fall comparatively early.

Overall, Sunday's weather carries two main messages — on one side, the well-marked low's active position at sea and the possibility of further intensification; on the other, a mainly dry day on land apart from limited rain in Chattogram.

If the low continues moving west-northwestwards and intensifies further, its influence on the weather in the coming days may grow. The Meteorological Department's next forecasts will then show whether the rain area expands and whether any additional caution is needed for coastal areas. For today, residents of Chattogram Division are the ones who need to stay prepared for rain, while the rest of the country will see a mainly dry day.
