Dhaka Seeks Answers from Riyadh Over Execution of Nazrul and Sweety, Sends Letter with Six Questions

Staff Reporter

Dhaka has sought answers from Riyadh over the execution of the death sentences of Nazrul and Sweety in Saudi Arabia. Bangladesh has sent Saudi Arabia a letter containing six questions on the matter — seeking an explanation of the process and circumstances of the executions is at the centre of this diplomatic step.

The execution of two Bangladeshis has created a strong reaction in the country. It is against that backdrop that Dhaka has formally sought answers from Riyadh — a step considered far more significant than routine diplomatic communication, those concerned believe.

Bangladesh's letter raises a total of six questions. By seeking specific explanations from the Saudi authorities over the executions, Dhaka has made clear that it is viewing the matter with utmost seriousness.

Saudi Arabia is one of Bangladesh's largest labour markets. A huge number of Bangladeshi workers work there, so any incident concerning the legal protection and trial process of Bangladeshi expatriates creates special sensitivity in relations between the two countries.

In the case of a final punishment like the death penalty, matters such as the accused's legal assistance, contact with the embassy and informing the family carry international importance. Dhaka's six-question letter is believed to be seeking answers on exactly those points — although the full details of the questions have not been officially published.

Those working on migrant welfare say that if a Bangladeshi becomes involved in a serious case abroad, ensuring quick consular assistance and legal representation is most urgent. Alongside seeking answers after a sentence has been carried out, questions are now also being raised about advance measures to avoid such situations in future.

The incident has created deep concern among Bangladesh's expatriate families. Countless families with relatives in Saudi Arabia now want to know how effective the arrangements are for standing beside a Bangladeshi who falls into legal trouble there.

The shadow of this incident could fall on labour market, trade and diplomatic cooperation — everything in Dhaka-Riyadh relations. However, because of the two countries' long-standing close relationship, it is believed the matter will be pursued through diplomatic channels.

All eyes are now on Riyadh's reply. Dhaka's next step — a further formal protest, or settling the matter through bilateral discussion — will depend on what explanation the Saudi authorities give.

The incident has once again brought to the fore the question of legal awareness among Bangladeshis abroad. Many workers spend years without adequate knowledge of the destination country's laws, which creates major risk in complicated situations.

For the families of Nazrul and Sweety, this letter is at least a formal recognition — the state is seeking answers over the execution of their relatives. When that answer comes, and what it contains, is now the biggest question.

This report will be updated when Saudi Arabia's response is received and new information on the matter emerges. For now, Dhaka's six-question letter is the most important development in this sensitive issue between the two countries.
