Four arrested in Narayanganj over Dhamrai auto garage robbery after six weeks
Police have arrested four people in connection with a robbery at a battery-run auto-rickshaw garage in Dhamrai, Dhaka. They were arrested on October 23 in raids in Narayanganj's Siddhirganj and Sonargaon areas, about six weeks after the robbery.
During the arrests, three looted battery-run auto-rickshaws and a pickup van used in the robbery were seized. Police said the recovered goods were directly linked to the robbery.
The arrested men are Sohel (30), Imam Hossain Shawon (32), Md Sabuj (29) and Habibur Rahman alias Ronok alias Roni (26). Police say Sohel is the ringleader of the gang.
On Saturday morning (October 24), the arrested men were sent to court. The legal process will proceed according to the court's next orders.
Police said the robbery took place in the early hours of September 10 at an auto-rickshaw garage owned by Billal Hossain in Chhota Kalampur area of Sutipara Union in Dhamrai. A group of eight to nine men wearing black masks entered the garage.
The group held the garage guard hostage at gunpoint. Police said his hands and feet were then tied and he was threatened with a hammer and a machete.
Four easy bikes, 27 batteries, the CCTV digital video recorder (DVR) and cash were looted from the garage. The total value of the looted goods was Tk 10 lakh 88 thousand 500.
After the looting, the robbers fled in a pickup van. Police said that same pickup van was later seized in the raid.
A robbery case was filed at Dhamrai Police Station on September 11. Sub-Inspector (SI) S M Kawsar Sultan of Dhamrai Police Station was given charge of the investigation.
Police said that as there was no direct clue to the incident, SI Kawsar Sultan advanced the investigation with the help of information technology. Following that, raids were carried out in various areas of Siddhirganj and Sonargaon in Narayanganj from dawn to noon on October 23 and the four were arrested.
Dhamrai Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Nazmul Huda Khan said the incident was completely clueless. The robbers had also taken the CCTV DVR so that no evidence remained. However, through the investigating officer's skill, planned investigation and the help of information technology, it was possible to identify the gang members and bring them under the law.
After these arrests, efforts are expected to continue to find the remaining members of the robbery gang and recover the other looted goods. The next stage of the investigation will be determined after the court's decision.
