Shafiqur Rahman visits Moulvibazar for first time since election, questions local poll environment

Staff Reporter

Opposition leader Dr Shafiqur Rahman has visited Moulvibazar for the first time since the election. His trip to the Sylhet Division district has sparked fresh discussion in local politics.

Daily Tritiya Matra reported that this is his first visit to Moulvibazar since the election. The visit is therefore being seen as important not only organisationally but also for its political message among local leaders and activists.

At the same time, another report quoted the Jamaat-e-Islami ameer as saying that a fair environment for local elections has not yet been created. That remark was the main point of the Daily Bangla Post report.

Read together, the two reports show that after the national election, activity on the ground is now centred most on local elections. Raising the question of a fair environment from the opposition camp is part of that activity.

Moulvibazar is an important district of Sylhet Division. In this tea-garden-dominated district, expatriate voters and the worker population have always played a large role in electoral politics.

The opposition leader was expected to exchange views with party leaders and activists and review the organisational situation during the visit. However, the reports gave no further details of the visit programme.

With questions raised about the local election environment, discussion may also grow over the role of the Election Commission and the administration. A fair environment generally means voters being able to vote without hindrance, equal opportunity for candidates and a stable law-and-order situation.

Preparations around local elections are also under way in other districts of Sylhet Division. This visit to Moulvibazar reflects that ground-level picture of preparation.

Observers believe political activity across the division will increase further in the coming days around the local election schedule and candidate announcements. The opposition leader's visit is being seen as the start of that sequence.

It remains to be seen what response comes from the Election Commission and the government side to the question raised about a fair environment for local elections, and what organisational message the party gives from the Moulvibazar visit.
