Golam Parwar Is Running Propaganda to Embarrass the Government, Rizvi Alleges

Staff Reporter

BNP acting secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has alleged that Jamaat-e-Islami secretary general Mia Golam Parwar is trying to put the current government in an uncomfortable situation through lies and misleading propaganda.

He made the allegation on Saturday noon while taking part in a dengue-prevention public awareness leaflet distribution programme in the Fakirapool area of the capital. He made the allegation against his political opponent while attending a public health awareness programme.

Ruhul Kabir Rizvi claimed that Jamaat has a secret understanding with the Awami League, which was ousted from power in a mass movement and whose activities have been banned. He also said the BNP has already published sufficient documents and evidence before the nation in favour of this political understanding.

The senior BNP leader warned that the people will not accept any conspiracy to create fresh anarchy or instability in the country. In his words, if such an attempt is made, the people themselves will reject it.

He mentioned that, bypassing the ill attempts and provocative statements of opponents, the government is working very responsibly in the interest of the general public. He presented this assessment in favour of the government's work.

As an example of the government's policy success, he said Bangladesh's position in the World Hunger Index is satisfactory compared even with neighbouring India and Pakistan, which is a reflection of the current administration's correct steps. Through this comparison he argued in favour of the government's performance.

Rizvi's allegation is a fresh expression of the ongoing political tension between the BNP and Jamaat. Counter-statements by top leaders of the two parties have given rise to discussion in political circles.

No reaction from Golam Parwar to Rizvi's allegation was available as of the writing of this report. The allegation has therefore appeared in this report at this stage as the statement of the BNP leader.

Present at the leaflet distribution programme were BNP joint secretary general Advocate Abdus Salam Azad, volunteer affairs secretary Mir Sarafat Ali Sapu, Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal vice-president Dr Zahidur Rahman and Chhatra Dal vice-president Dr Touhidur Rahman Auwal, along with leaders and activists of the party at various levels.

The dengue-prevention public awareness leaflet distribution programme was the main event of the day. It was from that programme that Rizvi's political remarks drew media attention.

In political terms, both the allegation of embarrassing the government and the claim of a secret understanding are serious political allegations. Rizvi has claimed that the BNP has already published evidence in favour of these before the nation.

Political circles will now watch whether any reply comes from Jamaat after this statement and whether the exchange of statements between the two parties intensifies further.
