Joint RAB-9 and District Administration Drive in Habiganj: Five Establishments Fined for Adulterated Food, Overpricing and Missing Price Lists
Five establishments in Habiganj have been fined for mixing banned substances into food products, selling goods at excessive prices and failing to display price lists. The fines were imposed during a joint drive by RAB-9 and the district administration.
The five establishments were fined a total of Tk 26,000 during the drive. The joint operation against irregularities in the food and consumer goods market has drawn attention among local consumers.
The most serious of the allegations is the mixing of banned substances into food products. The drive was carried out against irregularities that pose a direct risk to consumers' health.
The second allegation is selling products at excessive prices. The establishments concerned were accused of charging customers more than the set or reasonable price for goods.
The third allegation is failing to display a price list at the shop. Displaying a price list is a consumer right — the rule exists to ensure transparency so buyers can know the price before they purchase.
RAB-9 and the district administration conducted the drive together. With the joint presence of the law enforcement agency and the administration, market irregularities were identified and fines were imposed on the spot.
Action was taken against a total of five establishments. In each case, one or more of the irregularities mentioned was found, which led to the decision to fine them.
The total amount of the fines is Tk 26,000. Beyond the monetary penalty, a major purpose of such drives is to send a warning message to other traders in the market.
Adulteration of food and the use of banned substances are a direct threat to public health. The Habiganj drive is therefore being seen as an important step for the protection of local consumers.
If such drives continue regularly, the practice of displaying price lists and selling at set prices is expected to grow in the market. Consumers will now be watching the continuity of the drives and the subsequent conduct of the establishments.
