Eight Detained from Jubo League Procession in Sreepur and Handed Over to Police
Eight members of the Jubo League, an associate organisation of the Awami League whose activities are banned, have been detained while holding a procession in Sreepur, Gazipur, and handed over to police. The incident took place on Friday after Jumu'ah prayers in the area adjoining the Sreepur police station gate.
According to information given by police, the detainees include Atiqur Rahman, Ariful Islam, Junaid Mia and Momen. The names of the remaining detainees could not be known.
The police information also noted that the party identities of the detainees could not be known. As a result, there is still no officially confirmed information about their organisational positions.
Several local sources said Jubo League leaders and activists began the procession on Friday afternoon from a spot near the Sreepur police station gate. The situation heated up soon after the procession began.
At that point, leaders and activists of the BNP and its associate organisations chased them, and they moved towards the Sreepur Madhya Bazar area. Faced with the chase, the procession participants scattered.
Later, eight people were detained from the Madhya Bazar area and handed over to police. That is how the incident reached the stage of police intervention.
Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Shahinur Alam of Sreepur Police Station confirmed the detention of the eight. He gave the information to Prothom Alo.
However, the OC claimed the procession took place not in front of the police station but in the Madhya Bazar area. There is this difference between the accounts of local sources and the police regarding the location.
The OC said legal action is being taken against the detainees. Further steps will be taken against them as part of the legal process.
