Head-On Collision Between Two Motorcycles on Jessore-Benapole Highway: Three Killed, Two More Fighting for Life in Hospital
Three people were killed in a head-on collision between two motorcycles in the Notunhat area of the Jessore-Benapole highway. Two more people were seriously injured in the accident on Friday night, and their condition is reported to be critical.
The accident happened at around 11:40pm on Friday (23 October) in the Boro Meghla area, past the Notunhat crossing in Deyara Union of Jessore Sadar Upazila. Late at night, two motorcycles travelling from opposite directions collided head-on on that stretch of the highway.
One of the dead is Siam Hossain, son of Shamim Hossain of Mondolgati in Jessore Sadar Upazila. A national identity card found on another victim gives his name as Ariful Islam Joy, his father's name as Shahidul Islam and his address as Piyari Mohan Road, Bejpara, Shankarpur, under Jessore Municipality. The third victim has not yet been identified.
The injured are Omar Faruk, son of Abdul Kader, and Rakib Hasan Rifat, son of Ruhul Amin, both of Mondolgati. The two were rescued and admitted to Jessore General Hospital, where they are receiving treatment, but both are reported to be in critical condition.
Local sources said that on Friday night Siam Hossain, Omar Faruk and Rakib Hasan Rifat were travelling on the same motorcycle from Mondolgati towards Benapole. When their motorcycle reached the Boro Meghla area past the Notunhat crossing, it collided head-on with another motorcycle coming from the opposite direction towards Jessore.
According to preliminary police information, three people died on the spot in the collision. The deceased Siam Hossain was a rider on the Benapole-bound motorcycle. The other two victims are initially believed to have been riders on the Jessore-bound motorcycle.
Three riders on a single motorcycle and a head-on collision on a highway late at night — the accident has again raised questions about the risks of motorcycle travel on highways and the need for caution. Beyond the police's preliminary information, however, the exact cause of the accident is not yet known.
Kabir Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Jessore Kotwali Model Police Station, said a national identity card in the name of Ariful Islam Joy was found on one of the victims. According to the card, his father's name is Shahidul Islam, and the address listed is Piyari Mohan Road, Bejpara, Shankarpur, Jessore Municipality, Jessore Sadar, Jessore.
The OC added that efforts are under way to contact that victim's family. Efforts are also continuing to identify the other person killed in the accident. Once the identity is confirmed, the process of handing over the body to the family will move forward.
The injured Omar Faruk and Rakib Hasan Rifat continue to receive treatment at Jessore General Hospital. Doctors are monitoring their physical condition, while their relatives wait in the hospital corridor.
Identifying the third victim and investigating the cause of the accident are now the main tasks before the police. Once the identity is established, his family will also be informed, and the investigation will reveal the full picture of this tragic late-night collision.
