Prime Minister Tarique Rahman Takes Full Responsibility for Eye Treatment of Day Labourer's Three-Year-Old Son Abu Bakkar

Staff Reporter

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has taken responsibility for the eye treatment of three-year-old Abu Bakkar of Nandigram in Bogura. When the day labourer father's family had become helpless trying to bear the cost of treatment for the child, who was born with an eye defect, the Prime Minister's initiative has brought fresh hope to the family.

Abu Bakkar's home is in Sidel village of Burail Union in Nandigram upazila. He has been growing up with an eye defect since birth, and even at this young age his eye has had to be operated on several times.

According to the report, the child has already undergone surgery three times for his treatment. In other words, at just three years old he has had to go to the operating table three times — a great ordeal for a small child and his family.

According to doctors' advice, if two more operations can be carried out, there is a possibility that his eye will recover. Although that possibility was known, arranging the money for that treatment was the biggest obstacle before the family.

Abu Bakkar's father is a day labourer. While running a family of two children on a limited income, he became helpless trying to bear the cost of his son's treatment. For a family living on daily earnings, continuing to pay for repeated operations had become difficult.

In that situation, a post appealing for help with the child's treatment spread on social media. That appeal eventually came to the Prime Minister's attention.

When the matter came to Tarique Rahman's notice, he took responsibility for the child's treatment. With the Prime Minister himself taking charge, the matter did not remain limited to an appeal — the process of implementing it has also begun.

On this matter, the Prime Minister instructed his Additional Press Secretary Atiqur Rahman Rumon to arrange the child's treatment. In other words, responsibility for organising the treatment has been given directly to an official of the Prime Minister's office.

Later, under the supervision of Additional Press Secretary and 'Amra BNP Poribar' convener Atiqur Rahman Rumon and member secretary Muksedul Momin Mithun, BNP Media Cell's Rajshahi and Rangpur division coordinator Kalam Azad and 'Amra BNP Poribar' Bogura representative Md Rashedduzzaman Pias are keeping overall local track of the child's treatment.

In other words, alongside the instruction from the centre, specific people have also been given responsibility at the local level to keep track of the child. This has created a structure for standing beside the family at every stage of the treatment.

The initiative to bear the cost of treatment has brought fresh hope to Abu Bakkar's family. His relatives expect that the child will recover through better treatment.

The family and relatives are now waiting for the remaining two operations advised by the doctors. If those are completed successfully, there is a possibility that three-year-old Abu Bakkar's eye will recover — and it is in that expectation that the day labourer's family is counting the days.
