Measles deaths in Sylhet reach 200 as three more children die with symptoms in a single day
The measles outbreak in the Sylhet region has taken a frightening turn. Regional reports say the number of measles deaths in Sylhet has reached 200. The picture emerged in a report centered on Sunamganj, indicating a severe spread of the disease among children across the division.
Meanwhile, three more children have died in Sylhet in a single day with measles symptoms. Children are dying with symptoms before infections can be confirmed by testing — and such reports keep coming in from different parts of the division.
Sylhet's situation is part of the nationwide measles outbreak. According to the Directorate General of Health Services, seven more children died across the country in the last 24 hours from measles and its symptoms.
That brings the total death toll from measles and its complex symptoms since this year's outbreak began to 1,214 nationwide.
A review of the directorate's data shows that from March 15 to October 23 this year, 1,103 children died with measles symptoms alone. In the same period, another 104 children died of laboratory-confirmed measles.
The number of infections is also rising sharply. In a single day, another 1,135 children across the country were infected with measles and its symptoms; among them, laboratory tests confirmed infection in 25 children, while the remaining 1,110 received treatment for symptoms.
The total number of suspected measles patients in the country now stands at 218,870, of whom 23,273 have been confirmed through testing.
A total of 194,633 patients have been admitted to hospitals with the infection so far, of whom 186,798 have already recovered, been discharged and returned home.
Alongside measles, the dengue outbreak is also making the public health situation alarming. According to the health directorate's combined update, measles and dengue together claimed 11 lives in a single day; in the same period, 2,193 people were admitted to hospitals with dengue — the highest single-day figure this year.
With measles infections being reported from Sylhet, Sunamganj and other parts of the division, concern over the safety of the region's children keeps growing. The health directorate is issuing regular updates; all eyes are now on which way the outbreak moves next.
