BNP leader and police sub-inspector killed by speeding car in Kaliganj while returning with an arrested suspect

Staff Reporter

A local BNP leader and a police sub-inspector (SI) have been killed in Gazipur’s Kaliganj after being run over by a speeding car while returning to the police station with an arrested suspect. Another SI and a police constable were seriously injured in the incident.

The accident took place in the early hours of Friday (23 October) in front of Sramik College in Ward No. 2 of Kaliganj municipality. Details of the incident have emerged from police and local sources.

The deceased BNP leader was Mohammad Rafiqul Islam (48), known locally as Rafiq Molla. He was the organising secretary of BNP’s Ward No. 2 unit in Kaliganj municipality and the son of the late Waz Uddin of the Tumlia area.

The deceased police member was SI Md Mizanur Rahman. The two injured are SI Jabed Omar and police constable Md Rabbi. Their condition has been described as critical.

According to police and local sources, at around 3am on Friday a police team raided the Madhakkhar Bari area of Kaliganj to arrest a man named Ohid Molla. After arresting him, the team set off back towards the police station.

On the way back, the team reached the front of Kaliganj Sramik College. There, SI Mizanur Rahman and the other police members were talking with local BNP leader Rafiqul Islam. It was at that very moment that the fatal accident occurred.

A speeding car lost control and ran over the people standing beside the road. Rafiqul Islam died on the spot, while the police members present were seriously injured.

The injured were later rescued and taken to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex. After initial treatment there, they were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment, where SI Mizanur Rahman died while undergoing treatment.

Meanwhile, Ohid Molla, who had been arrested in the police raid, fled from the scene after the accident, according to local sources. As a result, the raid ultimately remained incomplete.

Kaliganj Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Md Zakir Hossain confirmed the incident. He said the accident occurred at around 3:30am on Friday on the road beside Kaliganj Sramik College, killing two people including a police member.

The OC also said efforts are under way to identify the killer vehicle and arrest those involved. The process of taking necessary legal action over the incident is also ongoing, he said.

The deaths of an on-duty police officer and a local political leader in the early-hours accident have cast a pall of grief over the area. All eyes are now on identifying the vehicle and arresting those responsible.
