Brook's Fastest-Ever Double Century Not Enough as Sri Lanka Chase Down 430 to Beat England
Sri Lanka beat England by two wickets in one of the most astonishing one-day internationals ever played in Rawalpindi on Thursday, smashing a six off the penultimate ball to chase down a huge target of 430 with just one ball to spare.
Needing eight runs off the final over, Sri Lanka lost two wickets to paceman Josh Tongue, but Janith Liyanage kept his cool to hit the winning six and finish unbeaten on 61 off 27 balls.
It was the second-highest successful run chase in ODI history. The record belongs to South Africa, who chased 435 against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006.
Earlier, the day had seemed to belong to England captain Harry Brook, who made the fastest double century in ODI history, scoring 202 off 116 balls as England, put in to bat, piled up 429 for four.
Brook reached 200 in 114 balls, beating the previous fastest double century by Shubman Gill, who took 117 balls for India against West Indies last month. Brook also became the first England batter to score an ODI double century.
His innings contained 10 sixes and 21 fours, and England added 156 runs in the last 10 overs. Brook was dismissed off the final delivery, caught off paceman Liyanage, who would later become Sri Lanka's hero with the bat.
Brook was supported by Joe Root, who scored 69 off 66 balls and in this match became the first England batter to complete 8,000 ODI runs, in his 197th one-day international. Opener Tom Banton made 50 off 51 balls and Will Jacks was unbeaten on 66 with three sixes and eight fours.
Chasing 430, Sri Lanka slipped to 24 for two before Pavan Rathnayake and Avishka Fernando transformed the innings with a 166-run third-wicket partnership.
Rathnayake made 130 with 15 fours and three sixes, while Avishka fell for 97. Rathnayake then combined with Dasun Shanaka in a rapid 133-run stand off just 79 balls, and Shanaka also made 97, with eight sixes and six fours.
The day had looked certain to belong to record-maker Brook. The previous highest ODI total at a Pakistan venue, 375 for three, was easily surpassed by both teams. But Sri Lanka had the final word.
Pakistan, who have beaten both Sri Lanka and England in their two games in the tri-series, will face England in Lahore on Sunday in the next match.
