Young Man Arrested in Ramu with Foreign Pistol and Bullets Amid Kishore Gang Fears
Police have arrested a young man named Mohammad Redwan in the Bottoli area of Gorjonia in Ramu upazila of Cox's Bazar, recovering a foreign pistol, two bullets and a magazine from him. Police claim the arrested youth leads a kishore gang, or juvenile gang.
The arrested Mohammad Redwan is 20 years old. He is the son of Nurul Amin, a resident of Paschim Bomangkhil in Ward No. 8 of Gorjonia Union.
Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Mohammad Yunus, who led the operation, said the raid was conducted at around 10:15 pm on Wednesday (21 October) acting on a tip-off. Redwan was arrested with the weapon and bullets in front of Maruf Member's car wash servicing centre at Bomangkhil Bottoli in Gorjonia.
ASI Mohammad Yunus added that after Redwan's arrest, Gorjonia police outpost in-charge Anisur Rahman and other concerned officials were informed of the matter.
Gorjonia police outpost in-charge Anisur Rahman said the arrested youth was being interrogated. He was scheduled to be sent to court through Ramu police station the following morning.
The arrest has brought concerns over kishore gang activity in the area back into focus. Local conscious citizens claim that kishore gang activity has increased in the eastern part of Ramu upazila and in various unions of Naikhongchhari upazila.
According to them, more than three hundred kishore gangs are active in Gorjonia, Kochchhopiya, Baishari, Eidgar and Kauyarkhop, as well as in various areas of Naikhongchhari upazila. Each of these gangs has five to eight or ten members, they claim.
The local conscious citizens allege that many members of these gangs possess domestic and foreign weapons. They are therefore unwilling to treat the recovery of a foreign pistol from one gang member as an isolated incident.
They further said that gunshots are heard at night from various places across the vast border area. This has created panic among local residents.
Members of the local conscious circle also said that a few days ago a person was injured by gunfire in the Doctorkata area of Kochchhopiya. Attention will now be on what information emerges from Redwan's interrogation and how the case proceeds after he is sent to court.
