Staff Reporter • Reading time: 2 min

A youth named Aslam Hossain (30) has been accused of entering Kalai police station in Joypurhat carrying a wooden batom (club) and attacking three police personnel. All three were injured; one of them needed four stitches on the thumb of his right hand. The youth, who fled after the attack, was later arrested and sent to a court in Joypurhat on Wednesday, police said.

Aslam Hossain is the son of Munsur Rahman of Thupsara village in Kalai municipal town. The attack took place inside the Kalai police station premises at around 7:30pm on Monday (19 October).

According to the first information report (FIR) filed at the station, police personnel were at the time preparing to leave for Durga Puja duty. Aslam then entered the station holding a wooden club. When officers asked his identity and why he had come, he struck at constable Md Mahmudul Hasan Roki.

Roki moved aside, but the blow landed on his left jaw, leaving him bloodied and injured. When officers tried to detain Aslam, he hit driver constable Masud Rana on the back. Another policeman who tried to restrain him suffered a serious injury to the thumb of his right hand.

When other police personnel rushed forward, Aslam dropped the club and ran out of the station premises. The injured officers were given first aid at Kalai Upazila Health Complex.

An FIR has been filed over the incident. The FIR also mentions that Aslam Hossain faces several cases under the narcotics and gambling laws.

Kalai police station officer-in-charge (OC) Saidul Alam said a youth entered the station and attacked police personnel. At the time of the incident he was on duty with a state minister. Aslam was later arrested in a raid, he said.

After his arrest, Aslam Hossain was sent to a court in Joypurhat on Wednesday (21 October). The attack on on-duty policemen inside a police station has sparked local discussion, and has also raised questions about security within station premises at a time when officers were preparing for Puja deployment.

Police said the case will be investigated on the basis of the FIR and the motive behind the attack will be examined. The status of the earlier cases against Aslam will also be verified during the investigation, according to the sources concerned.
