Chinese-Owned SBS Zipper Begins Commercial Operations in BEPZA Economic Zone
M/S SBS Zipper Bangladesh Company, a 100 percent Chinese-owned industrial enterprise, has formally begun commercial operations at BEPZA Economic Zone-01 in Mirsarai, Chattogram. The factory's move into production was completed through an inauguration ceremony held on Tuesday.
This is being seen as a significant development for the growth of foreign direct investment and industrialization in the economic zone.
A press release from BEPZA said 140 local workers are currently employed at the factory. When the company moves into full-scale production, employment opportunities will open up for more than two thousand Bangladeshis.
The proposed investment of the company has been set at 19.97 million US dollars, of which 15.51 million dollars has already been invested.
The factory, built across six plots in the economic zone, produces various types of modern zippers, zipper accessories, plastic buttons and related equipment.
The ceremony marking the factory's launch was attended by the chairman of SBS Zipper Group, foreign buyer representatives, top officials of the company and invited guests. Abdullah Al Mahbub, executive director of BEPZA Economic Zone-01, congratulated and welcomed the new company at the event.
According to the overall picture of BEPZA Economic Zone-01, out of a total of 279 industrial plots, 263 plots and one six-storey factory building have been allotted to 47 companies.
Including SBS Zipper, 14 companies are currently in full commercial production there. In addition, construction work of 17 companies is in full swing, and several more companies are about to begin their commercial production very soon.
Those concerned expect that SBS Zipper's commercial operations will play an effective role in the growth of the country's export-oriented industrial sector.
It is also expected to play a positive role in attracting new foreign capital and creating employment opportunities at the local level.
With nearly four-fifths of the proposed investment already completed, observers see this as a sign of the company's long-term commitment.
Considering the demand for zippers, buttons and such accessories in the garment and allied industries, the new factory is expected to add a new dimension to the country's supply chain.
