Kings Keep Winning Run in Federation Cup as Mohammedan Drop Points in Draw with PWD

Staff Reporter • Reading time: 2 min

Three Federation Cup matches were played on the holiday. Bashundhara Kings continued their winning run, beating City Club 2-0 in Manikganj to strengthen their position in Group B. Dhaka Mohammedan, meanwhile, dropped points in Munshiganj after a 1-1 draw with PWD Sports Club. In the day's other match, Arambagh Krira Sangha and Dhaka Wanderers played out a 2-2 draw.

At Shaheed Miraj Tapan Stadium in Manikganj, Brazilian forward Robson Robinho put the Kings ahead in the 17th minute. City Club's Gambian defender Foday Darboe fouled him inside their own box, and Robson made no mistake from the penalty spot.

Two minutes later, City Club suffered another blow as their goalkeeping coach Nuruzzaman Nayan was shown a red card and had to leave the dugout.

The Kings doubled the lead before half-time. In the 40th minute, Rakib Hossain's shot was saved by goalkeeper Ishaq, but Nigerian forward Omeka Ogbug headed in the rebound. No further goals followed, and the Kings left the field with a 2-0 victory.

At Shaheed Birshreshtha Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Stadium in Munshiganj, Mohammedan dominated the attack in the first half but had to wait until the 61st minute for a goal. Souleymane Diabate finished skillfully from Faisal Ahmed's long pass to put the black-and-whites ahead.

Mohammedan could not hold on to that lead, however. In the 76th minute, Cameroonian forward Yohan Mabida equalised for PWD with a superb overhead kick. Neither side could find another goal, and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

The draw leaves Mohammedan second in the group with four points from two matches. Bashundhara Kings sit top of Group B with six points from the same number of matches. The Kings now have a clear path to hold on to top spot in the group stage, while Mohammedan must look to their remaining matches.

In the day's other match at Gopalganj District Stadium, Arambagh Krira Sangha and Dhaka Wanderers drew 2-2. Both sides had chances to move ahead, but in the end they had to settle for a share of the points.

All told, of the holiday's three matches, one produced a winner while the other two ended in draws. The biggest message of the day, though, was Bashundhara Kings' consistency — back-to-back wins keep them top of the group and strengthen their claim to the title.
