CNG Workers Postpone Rally in Sylhet After City Corporation Administrator's Assurance
CNG workers in Sylhet have postponed their planned rally after receiving an assurance from the administrator of the Sylhet City Corporation. The decision has eased, at least for now, the tension that had built up over transport movement in the city, according to those concerned.
Drivers and workers of CNG-run vehicles account for a large share of urban transport in Sylhet. Every day, countless passengers depend on these vehicles to reach workplaces, educational institutions, hospitals and markets. As a result, any programme by the workers directly affects city life.
Anxiety had grown among passengers after the rally programme was announced. There were fears that if vehicle movement was disrupted during the programme, office-goers, patients and students would suffer. Against that backdrop, the workers decided to postpone the rally after the assurance from the administration.
For labour organisations, securing demands through discussion is a familiar path. Postponing a programme usually means time has been given for the authorities' assurance to be implemented and progress will be watched during that period. If steps are not taken as assured, the possibility always remains that workers may return to programmes.
Questions of coordination among workers, owners, passengers and the city corporation in Sylhet's transport sector come up repeatedly. Stand management, traffic congestion, fares and the workers' working environment together have long created a demand for a sustainable solution in this sector.
For now, city residents are relieved that the rally has been postponed. Passengers want the workers' legitimate issues to be resolved at the discussion table, so that they do not have to fall repeatedly into a cycle of programmes and suffering.
The next steps now depend on implementation of the administration's assurance. If the parties concerned keep communicating and resolve the problems, stability is expected to return to Sylhet's urban transport.
