President accepts Ishraq Hossain's resignation: Cabinet Division issues formal notification

Staff Reporter • Reading time: 3 min

President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has formally accepted the resignation of Ishraq Hossain, who stepped down as state minister for liberation war affairs. With that, the sequence of events that began after he sparked controversy by joining an anti-drug operation carrying a weapon has reached its formal conclusion.

On Tuesday the Cabinet Division issued a formal notification on the matter. With the notification issued, Ishraq Hossain's departure from the post of state minister has now taken final shape in government records.

Earlier, on Monday afternoon, Ishraq Hossain formally announced his resignation at a press conference held at the National Press Club. After that announcement his resignation letter reached the President and a notification was awaited; on Tuesday that process was completed.

The incident began last Saturday. He sparked intense controversy by appearing, weapon in hand, at an anti-drug operation in the Gendaria railway line area of the capital. As pictures and reports of a state minister joining an operation in that manner spread, questions were raised in many quarters.

After the incident, widespread criticism began on social media and in various circles across the country. Discussion and criticism continued around the state minister's role, whose responsibility law enforcement is, and how acceptable it is for a public representative to display a weapon.

As a result of the situation, on Sunday Prime Minister Tarique Rahman directed him to resign from the post of state minister for liberation war affairs. It was after the head of government's direction that he decided to step down from the cabinet.

Monday's press conference after the Prime Minister's direction was the formal announcement of that decision. Standing at the Press Club, he announced his resignation, bringing the process of ending his time as state minister into the open.

On Tuesday, with the President's acceptance of the resignation and the Cabinet Division's notification, the final step of that process was also completed. The post of state minister for liberation war affairs will now remain vacant until someone new is given the responsibility.

From Saturday to Tuesday — in a sequence of events spanning just four days — a state minister's departure from the cabinet has become the most discussed subject in the country's politics. The Gendaria incident, the criticism that followed, the Prime Minister's direction, the announcement at a press conference and finally the President's acceptance and the notification — every step was at the centre of intense public interest.

Through this resignation, the question of accountability within the government has also come to the fore. Because the Prime Minister himself directed the resignation, the matter did not remain limited to one state minister's personal decision; it is being seen instead as an expression of the government's position.

Attention will now turn to the next steps — who is given charge of the vacant post of state minister for liberation war affairs, and whether any further formal explanation or action follows on the questions raised around the Gendaria incident.

For now, with the notification issued, the Ishraq Hossain chapter in the cabinet has formally closed. But the controversy from which this resignation originated is likely to linger in political discussion for some days more.
