Deadly floods devastate eastern Spain as Els Poblets residents clear mud and wrecked furniture from their homes
Residents in eastern Spain have begun clearing mud and wreckage from their homes after severe flooding left at least two people dead. In Els Poblets, near Alicante, mud-covered furniture was piled outside houses on Monday as people confronted the scale of the destruction.
The flooding was brought by Storm Adam, which caused severe inundation across the region. Flash waters entered homes in low-lying areas, leaving many families facing extensive damage.
Some residents said floodwaters had risen more than 1.5 metres inside their properties. At that depth, nearly everything inside a home is destroyed, residents said.
From Monday morning, people were seen sweeping thick layers of mud from kitchens and living rooms. Furniture caked in mud was carried outside, much of it no longer usable.
Candy Vanes, 56, whose home was badly damaged, summed up the loss in one line: "We can't use a single thing." Her account reflects the experience of many households in the area.
Emergency crews have arrived to assess the destruction. Work is under way to establish how badly each property has been hit and what help each family will need.
For residents, the immediate task is clearing their homes and salvaging whatever can still be saved. Removing mud, drying soaked belongings and discarding ruined items is a long process that has now begun in Els Poblets.
The floods in eastern Spain are a fresh reminder of how exposed coastal and low-lying communities are to sudden heavy rain and storms. Homes can be submerged in a short space of time, a pattern that has renewed concern in the region.
For many residents, the biggest questions now are how long it will take to make their homes habitable again and when the help they need will arrive. The clean-up and that wait are proceeding side by side.
For now, the response is moving through rescue and assessment. Residents have taken the clean-up into their own hands, while emergency crews work on recording the damage and preparing support.
