Australian MP Helen Haines critically injured in deliberate car-ramming attack

Staff Reporter • Reading time: 2 min

Australian independent lawmaker Helen Haines was deliberately struck by a car on Monday, police say, in an incident Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has described as an attack. She was hit outside her office in Wangaratta, just over 200 kilometres northwest of Melbourne, and is receiving hospital treatment for serious injuries.

Victoria Police Acting Superintendent Ashley Mason said the 65-year-old lawmaker had suffered what were described as critical injuries. In line with Australian police custom, he did not identify the victim, but the prime minister himself characterised the incident as an attack.

After the incident, the 43-year-old male driver was first detained by members of the public. Police then arrested him and said a knife was found in his car. An investigation into the detained man is under way.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told national broadcaster ABC: "This wasn't an accident. There was a deliberate act." His remark makes clear that Australian authorities are not treating the incident as an ordinary road accident.

Albanese also told journalists: "All of our thoughts are with Helen, her family, her friends, her team, and her community at this extremely difficult time. We are praying for her full recovery." The alleged attacker's motive remained unknown, he said.

Australia's counter-terrorism squad has been activated in response to the incident. Threats against lawmakers have drawn growing attention in the country in recent years, and this attack has deepened that concern.

The Australian Federal Police has documented a steady rise in threats and abuse directed at the nation's politicians in recent years. Last year it established a dedicated team to investigate groups and individuals targeting lawmakers.

Albanese said on Monday that "the temperature has increased in recent times". "I've expressed that concern to people in the media," he said. Pointing to comments on social media, he said people say things there that they would never say face to face.

Haines entered parliament in 2019, after working as a nurse and midwife. She has become known for positions including support for stronger action on climate change.

She has been widely praised for her efforts to increase transparency in politics and crack down on corruption. Albanese described her as "incredibly hardworking", adding: "She is fiercely intelligent but, most importantly, she's just a thoroughly decent human being."

Her family said in a statement: "This afternoon, our beloved Helen was involved in an incident outside her Wangaratta Electorate Office, and is receiving medical care." The family thanked bystanders for their swift assistance, the health workers who treated her, and police for their response.

The family added that they and Haines's staff would make no further comment at this time and asked that their privacy be respected by the public and media. Attention across Australia is now fixed on the hospital as the critically injured lawmaker fights to recover.
