In the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) regular drives in the capital, 484 people were arrested in the past 24 hours. During the same period, 53 cases were filed on various charges. The largest number of arrests, 150, came from the Mirpur division.
Deputy Police Commissioner Md Akter Hossain of the DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division disclosed the figures on Monday (19 October). The DMP said the arrests and seizures were made during drives across various police station areas of the capital.
Police gave a division-by-division breakdown of the arrests: 37 people in Ramna division, 41 in Lalbagh, 50 in Wari, 68 in Motijheel, 76 in Tejgaon, 150 in Mirpur, 18 in Gulshan and 35 in Uttara.
In addition, the Detective Branch (DB) arrested 7 people and the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit arrested 2. Across all divisions, the total number of arrests in 24 hours stood at 484.
Drugs were recovered during the drives, including 560 grams of cannabis, 4,373 yaba pills, 3 grams of heroin and 204 bottles of phensedyl.
Alongside the drugs, police seized 9 motorcycles, 26 mobile phones, 405 SIM cards, 1,505 taka in cash and one auto-rickshaw. Police said the seized items were connected to various offences.
The DMP also said one victim was rescued during the drives. No separate details about the rescued person’s identity or the circumstances were provided.
The DMP said the arrests and seizures were carried out as part of regular drives in the capital’s police station areas. The drives are conducted over drugs, criminal activity and various outstanding allegations.
Police said the process of taking further legal action against the arrested individuals is under way. Legal proceedings, including the 53 cases filed, are being taken forward at the relevant police stations.
The DMP has been running such regular drives to keep the capital’s law-and-order situation normal. Continuing its practice of releasing daily drive results to the media, the police published the past 24 hours’ figures on Monday as well.
According to the police figures, arrests in the Mirpur division in this drive were notably higher than in any other division. With 150 arrests Mirpur topped the list, followed by Tejgaon and Motijheel.
After legal procedures, the arrested individuals will be sent to court. Whether the drives will continue and which areas will be prioritised next is expected to be known from the DMP’s next briefing.
