Mbappe Brace Powers Real Madrid Past Sevilla 4-1 to Third Place Ahead of El Clasico
Kylian Mbappe scored twice as Real Madrid recorded a big La Liga win, thrashing Sevilla 4-1 on Sunday to climb to third place in the table. The result restores confidence in the Madrid camp a week before El Clasico at Camp Nou, although leaders Barcelona still hold a six-point advantage.
Madrid's goals came in a flowing sequence. Arda Guler opened the scoring with a dazzling strike, before Mbappe took over the stage with two goals that effectively settled the match. A superb long-range shot from Yan Diomande later stretched the margin even further.
Mbappe's first goal was extraordinary. At the edge of Sevilla's penalty box, he beat his marker with a roulette turn before finishing, a flash of skill that underlines his status among the world's best forwards. His second came from the penalty spot, a Panenka kick that completely deceived the goalkeeper.
The win lifted Real Madrid above Real Betis, who had lost 5-2 to league leaders Barcelona on Saturday. Atletico Madrid remain second, sandwiched between the two Spanish giants.
Head coach Jose Mourinho had big selection calls to make. Brazilian winger Vinicius Junior was absent through suspension, so Yan Diomande started on the left flank, while Arda Guler kept his place in the central midfield pairing. Both repaid the coach's faith by getting on the scoresheet.
The story behind Vinicius's absence is still a talking point in Spain. He was sent off last week for pulling an opponent's hair, and that dismissal has fuelled anger over refereeing decisions across Spain, particularly in Madrid.
At the Santiago Bernabeu, Real supporters chanted against La Liga president Javier Tebas and displayed banners during the match. Tebas had earlier said that Real Madrid's efforts to undermine the credibility of referees resembled the propaganda methods of Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels. The fallout from that comment continues to simmer off the pitch.
On the pitch, Madrid's response was emphatic: attacking football and a commanding win. Guler's creativity, Mbappe's finishing and Diomande's long-range strike kept Sevilla's defence under pressure throughout, and the 4-1 scoreline helped Madrid's goal difference as well as their points tally.
All eyes now turn to next week's El Clasico at Camp Nou, where Real Madrid face reigning champions Barcelona. Barcelona will start the match six points clear, making it close to essential for Madrid to take points from the game if they are to stay in the title race.
This win achieved at least two things in the meantime: it secured third place ahead of Betis, and it proved Madrid can win big matches without Vinicius. Whether Vinicius returns for the Clasico will shape much of Mourinho's planning.
The La Liga title race is now a three-team contest between Barcelona, Atletico and Real. Six points is a significant gap, but a single Clasico result can cut it in half. After this win over Sevilla, Real head to Camp Nou with both rhythm and belief.
