US Airman Dies After Falling During Pre-Game Rappelling Display, Investigation Begins

Staff Reporter • Reading time: 2 min

An airman has been killed after falling during a rope-descent display before the start of a college football game in the United States. The tragic accident happened on Saturday at the Alamodome stadium in Texas, before UTSA's match against the Navy. A military investigation has begun into the incident.

The deceased serviceman was serving with Detachment 2 of the 6th Combat Training Squadron at Nellis Air Force Base. His identity has not yet been released. It has been learned that an investigation is under way to determine the cause of the accident.

The display was part of UTSA's annual 'Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans' pre-game ceremony. According to the plan, four officers were to descend onto the field by rope 15 minutes before the game started.

Witnesses described that the serviceman lost control while descending. He slid down the rope and crashed onto the grass of the field below. Medical personnel at the scene gave him first aid.

He was later taken on a stretcher to a local hospital, where he died. A festive pre-game ceremony was covered in an atmosphere of mourning within moments.

The servicemen taking part in this display are specialised Tactical Air Controllers. Attached to Army and Marine ground units, they assist in directing air and artillery strikes. Their regular training also includes practice in rapidly descending by rope from heights of 100 feet or more.

The match's kickoff was delayed by 10 minutes because of the accident. UTSA head coach Jeff Traylor described the incident as 'heartbreaking' and 'tragic'. He said the atmosphere inside the stadium changed in an instant.

Coach Traylor said, 'You could tell, all the energy was gone. It really makes you put everything into perspective.' His remark itself reflects how a sporting event turned into an occasion of mourning in a flash.

In a statement, UTSA President Taylor Eighmy said, 'Our hearts are heavy over the tragic incident that occurred at the Alamodome before Saturday's UTSA versus United States Naval Academy match. What was supposed to be a day of camaraderie, tradition and celebration has been overshadowed by deep sorrow.' He expressed deep condolences to the family of the deceased serviceman, his fellow airmen and his squadron.

San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones also expressed grief on social media. She wrote that she was deeply saddened by the death of an airman in the unfortunate accident at Saturday's match and would keep his family in her prayers.

The specific cause of the accident cannot be known until the investigation is complete. But the investigation process is looking for the answer to the question of how this accident happened during a display by experienced and trained servicemen. Everyone is waiting to learn the identity of the deceased serviceman and the progress of the investigation.
