Four Soldiers Killed, Many Seriously Injured in Devastating Fire at Military Base in Canada

Staff Reporter • Reading time: 3 min

At least four soldiers have been killed and several dozen more seriously injured in a devastating fire at a military base in Canada. Prime Minister Mark Carney has described the fire, which spread through Canadian Forces Base Wainwright on Saturday, as one of the most tragic incidents in peacetime in Canada's military history. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The base is a busy training facility located in a remote area of Alberta province, behind barbed-wire fences. According to information provided by the authorities, the fire broke out at around four in the afternoon local time on Saturday - ten at night Greenwich Mean Time. But the authorities have not yet been able to confirm exactly how the fire started.

Local media reported that the fire may have started when a gas pipeline was struck during live-fire exercises under way on the base's ranges. Prime Minister Carney, however, did not confirm this cause. He said a 'violent, fast-moving fire' spread across the base. The Municipal District of Wainwright said on social media that strong winds caused the fire to spread quickly.

Carney said military and civilian firefighters fought the fire throughout the night in unimaginably adverse conditions, putting their own lives at risk to protect fellow Canadians. Canada's Department of National Defence said the cause of the fire was under investigation and that at this stage there was no indication it was the result of any terrorist act.

It has also not yet been confirmed whether the injured were on the base's vast training ranges, or whether the fire had spread to residential living areas. This uncertainty has heightened concern surrounding the incident, as the number of members training and stationed at the base is large.

In an address to the nation on Sunday, Carney confirmed that four soldiers had lost their lives. He said several 'dozen' more members had been seriously injured, but gave no details about their condition. Before Carney's statement, Canadian media, citing military sources, had reported the death toll as seven. The Prime Minister gave no indication as to whether the number of dead could rise further.

The names of the deceased have not yet been released, but their families have been informed, it was stated. It goes without saying that this time of waiting and uncertainty is extremely difficult for the families.

Following the incident, Edmonton's Royal Alexandra Hospital declared a 'Code Orange' on Saturday evening - the emergency disaster-response protocol for mass-casualty events. It was withdrawn on Sunday afternoon. Alberta's health authority said the emergency response operation lasted 10 hours and involved 22 ambulances and eight aircraft. The statement also said that treatment of the injured would continue at an 'intensive' level.

Ambulances were seen arriving at the hospital one after another. One doctor told Canada's public broadcaster CBC that the hospital was completely 'overwhelmed' by the number of patients. This remark gives an idea of the number of injured and the severity of their injuries.

Canadian Forces Base Wainwright is located in rural Alberta - about 120 miles (193 kilometres) from Edmonton and about 180 miles (290 kilometres) from Calgary, two of the province's big cities. It is one of the Canadian Army's busiest training bases, and its airfield is also used by the Royal Canadian Air Force. Although the base's population fluctuates, more than a thousand people can be present there at any given time.

All eyes are now on the investigation. The authorities are looking for answers to questions such as how such a deadly fire could spread during an exercise and whether there were any shortcomings in the safety arrangements. Attention will also remain on the condition of the seriously injured being treated in hospital, because the final picture of this tragedy depends on them.
