Signs of a New Low Over the Bay of Bengal; Night Temperatures May Fall
A new low may form over the Andaman Sea of the Bay of Bengal and the surrounding areas within the next few days. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has given this indication. If the new low forms, its impact could fall on the weather of the country's coastal areas.
This information was given in the forecast provided by meteorologist Dr. Md. Omar Faruk on Sunday (18 October). The Meteorological Department said a trough of low currently extends up to the north Bay of Bengal. Under the influence of this trough, a gradual change in weather is being seen over the sea and the coast.
According to the forecast, until 9 a.m. on Monday (19 October), the sky may remain temporarily partly cloudy across the country. The weather will remain mainly dry at this time. However, day and night temperatures may fall slightly, the weather office said.
No significant change in the weather is likely in the following 24 hours either. The weather will remain mainly dry across the country. Although the day temperature will remain nearly unchanged, the night temperature may fall slightly — as a result, a light feel of winter may be sensed at night and in the early morning.
In the 24 hours from 9 a.m. on 21 October, rain or thundershowers may occur at one or two places in Chattogram division. In the country's other regions, although the sky will remain partly cloudy, the weather is more likely to remain mainly dry. At this time, day and night temperatures may remain nearly unchanged.
The forecast for 22 October also shows the same picture. Although there is a possibility of rain or thundershowers at one or two places in Chattogram division, the weather in the rest of the country will remain mainly dry and day and night temperatures across the country may remain nearly unchanged.
According to meteorologists, this time in October is the junction of the monsoon's departure and winter's arrival. The formation of a low over the Bay of Bengal at this time is not unusual, and in the past, cyclones have also originated from lows in this season. However, they see no cause for panic about this possible low for the time being.
If a new low forms, the tendency of rainfall in coastal areas may increase under its influence. In particular, intermittent rain may occur in the coastal districts of Chattogram division. However, the forecast indicates that the likelihood of a major impact in the country's central and northern regions is low.
With night temperatures falling across the country, the tendency for fog in the early morning may increase. Experts say that during this seasonal change, the incidence of cold-related illnesses rises, so it is good for children and the elderly to take extra caution.
The Meteorological Department said the situation over the sea is being monitored regularly. If a low forms or the situation changes, that will be announced in the next forecast.
